Summary

The National Book Critics Circle Award–winning author delivers a collection of essays that serve as the perfect “antidote to mansplaining” (The Stranger).   In her comic, scathing essay “Men Explain Things to Me,” Rebecca Solnit took on what often goes wrong in conversations between men and women. She wrote about men who wrongly assume they know things and wrongly assume women don’t, about why this arises, and how this aspect of the gender wars works, airing some of her own hilariously awful encounters.   She ends on a serious note— because the ultimate problem is the silencing of women who have something to say, including those saying things like, “He’s trying to kill me!”   This book features that now-classic essay with six perfect complements, including an examination of the great feminist writer Virginia Woolf’s embrace of mystery, of not knowing, of doubt and ambiguity, a highly original inquiry into marriage equality, and a terrifying survey of the scope of contemporary violence against women.   “In this series of personal but unsentimental essays, Solnit gives succinct shorthand to a familiar female experience that before had gone unarticulated, perhaps even unrecognized.” —The New York Times   “Essential feminist reading.” —The New Republic   “This slim book hums with power and wit.” —Boston Globe   “Solnit tackles big themes of gender and power in these accessible essays. Honest and full of wit, this is an integral read that furthers the conversation on feminism and contemporary society.” —San Francisco Chronicle   “Essential.” —Marketplace   “Feminist, frequently funny, unflinchingly honest and often scathing in its conclusions.” —Salon

“An account of the author’s first operational tour as an RAF navigator . . . in support of the Korean War and the Malayan Emergency.”—Pennant Magazine   This is the first book to give a detailed, first-hand account of post-World War II RAF Short Sunderland operations in the Far East. Derek K. Empson was a navigator with 88 Squadron and later 205 Squadron, flying operations during the Korean War, the Malayan Emergency and many other operations. He was based at Seletar in Singapore, Kaitak in Hong Kong, Iwakuni near Hiroshima and various other operational bases throughout his two-and-a-half-year tour.   The Sunderland flying boat was a unique aircraft in that each crew was allotted an aircraft which became their floating and airborne home. Among Empson’s noteworthy events is a return flight from Singapore to Hong Kong across 1,400 miles of ocean with a VIP passenger, his first operational flight as a 21 year old Pilot Officer navigator. He then undertakes an operation involving a return trip to Scotland which took three months. On moving to Kiatak, the Sunderlands provided air cover for search and rescue operations, taking off and landing amongst the port’s many small and erratically steered shipping craft. He flew sixty-one missions in support of the United Nations forces fighting in and around Korea, enduring the threat of Chinese fighters over the Yellow Sea. In one operation an engine fire caused the crew to ditch in the Tsushima Strait with serious structural failure and they were rescued by the USS De Haven, a US destroyer.   This is a worthy record of some of the legendary Short Sunderland’s final roles in the RAF.

Sharing stories and inspiring lessons on leadership and design, one architect explains how he helped build one of the world’s most successful firms Founded on July 4, 1976, Kohn Pedersen Fox quickly became a darling of the press with groundbreaking buildings such as the headquarters for the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) in New York, 333 Wacker Drive in Chicago, the Procter & Gamble headquarters in Cincinnati, and the World Bank Headquarters in Washington, DC. By the early 1990s, when most firms in the U.S. were struggling to survive a major recession, KPF was busy with significant buildings in London, Germany, Canada, Japan, Korea, and Indonesia—pioneering a model of global practice that has influenced architecture, design, and creative-services firms ever since. Like any other business, though, KPF has stumbled along the way and wrestled with crises. But through it all, it has remained innovative in an ever-changing field that often favors the newest star on the horizon. Now in its fifth decade, the firm has shaped skylines and cities around the world with iconic buildings such as the World Financial Center in Shanghai, the International Commerce Centre in Hong Kong, the DZ Bank Tower in Frankfurt, the Heron Tower in London, and Hudson Yards in New York. Forthright and engaging, Kohn examines both award-winning achievements and missteps in his 50-year career in architecture. In the process, he shows how his firm, KPF, has helped change the buildings and cities where we live, work, learn, and play.“A must-read for all of those who love cities and the buildings and skylines that define them.” —Stephen M. Ross, chairman and founder of The Related Companies

Amy Bloch, accomplished psychiatrist, busy and fully in control of her professional and family life, was dealt what she thought was a devastating, insurmountable set-back when her daughter Emily was born with a severe brain malformation. Amy tried desperately to “fix” Emily and exhausted herself in her efforts to deal with the “problem” using her intellect, going at it brain-first, the way we tend to approach any challenge in our society. Emily, by default, lives completely heart-first: She simply doesn’t have the capabilities to approach life brain-first.

The Power of Heart is the distillation of what Emily taught Amy—applicable to anyone’s life. While the brain is amazing, powerful, and also quite useful, it does come with limitations. And there’s some stuff the brain just doesn’t know, which is where the heart comes in. Tapping into the heart helps your brain perform better—and makes you stronger and smarter than you will ever be trusting only the brain.

The heart will allow you to live with uncertainty; find strength, resilience, courage, and persistence in tough times; know your true self; manage emotions; and cast off self-criticism and doubt.

Amy’s message of living heart-first, in conjunction with the brain, is presented in deeply thoughtful, life-affirming, inspiring, practical, and accessible chapters that will resonate with listeners of all ages and walks of life who are in search of coping strategies and self-improvement.

Discover the most fearsome and fascinating women to ever live in the Ocean State in this collection of wild historical profiles.   In Witches, Wenches & Wild Women of Rhode Island, local historian M.E. Reilly-McGreen reveals true tales of women who caused scandals in their day. It’s a compendium of rebellious deeds, outlandish gossip, and superstition run amok.   Mercy Brown was a nineteen-year-old consumption victim thought to be a vampire. Locals were so afraid of Mercy that her body was exhumed to perform a ritual banishment of the undead. Goody Seager was accused of infesting her neighbor’s cheese with maggots by using witchcraft. According to legend, Tall “Dutch” Kattern was an opium-eating fortuneteller whose curse set a ship aflame after its crew cast her ashore.   Along with these tales, you’ll read of revolutionaries, like Julia Ward Howe, who invented Mother’s Day; and religious reformers like Anne Hutchinson, said to be the inspiration for Hawthorne's heroine in The Scarlet Letter; and many others.
