“Chocolate peanut butter cups and candy bars are transformed into elegant, sophisticated sweets using the finest chocolate and freshest ingredients.” —The San Diego Union-Tribune

The beloved candy bars of childhood have grown up, but there is no need to go to the French Laundry to get your fix. Candy bar devotees Susie Norris and Susan Heeger show how to reinvent candy bars as they should be—thick and layered with nougat, crisp with toffee, and coated with fine chocolate. Familiar candy-store bars and other nostalgic favorites are re-created using the freshest ingredients, right down to the peanut-laden caramel and chocolate-drenched cookie crunch. A mix-and-match flavor chart inspires anyone with a sweet tooth to dream up custom treats of their own, such as covering marshmallows with molten chocolate. From the basics of candy making to tips on dressing up these luscious indulgences as elegant desserts, Hand-Crafted Candy Bars evokes the sweet memory of youth with simple, scrumptious sophistication.

“Recipes for everything from Molten Chocolate-Peanut Bars, a Snickers taste-alike, to Candied Mint and Citrus Bark. Those sugar-crisped mint leaves look particularly Halloweenish peeking from the surface.” —The Times Herald

“Incorporates their love of candy, natural ingredients and other confections with terrific recipes for the home cook. You can even create your own signature candy bar (look for their suggestions in the mix-and-match flavor chart to get started).” —Dying for Chocolate

“Their book is filled with recipes for making ‘grown-up confections’ from home using high-quality fresh ingredients. Far (but not too far) cries from the dollar bars at the corner store.” —Relish

    The Complete Guide to Foraging...

In a world where the future is uncertain, food and water will turn out to be a scarce commodity. Foraging will become, for some, a way of life, and it will be their only chance of survival when facing the great outdoors. Foraging is a skill that has become forgotten, and even though it was used by our ancestors on a daily basis, today, we mainly hear about it in movies or survival TV shows.
I'm glad to see that this subject is still alive among the preppers and survivalist communities, and it was one of the main reasons that pushed me to write this book. I realize how important it is to keep this knowledge alive as one day it may save the reader's life. The advantage of gathering your own food from fields and woods is that they are fresher and don't have chemicals on them. Although the law governing foraging is very complex, in a survival situation, you will have all the rights to collect wild fruit, fungi, flowers, and foliage for your personal use.
This book aims to help the layperson identify and use edible greens that are found throughout the United States. I've also added at least one photograph for each plant for easier identification, but I've also listed the scientific names so that you can further research the plants you're interested in.
This guide should accompany any person that goes into the backcountry, and it will be a worthy companion in your foraging adventures.
I hope you enjoy the book as much as I've enjoyed writing it.

    Be safe and be wild!

Sweet Land of Liberty - A...

A delicious and delightful narrative history of pie in AmericaFrom pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving to apple pie on the Fourth of July, nearly every American shares a certain nostalgia for a simple circle of crust and filling. But for centuries, pie has been a malleable icon, equally enjoyed at the table and coopted for social and political purposes. After all, it was a slice of cherry pie denied at the Woolworth’s lunch counter that ignited a wave of anti-segregation protests across the South during the civil rights movement. Molasses pie, a Southern favorite, captures the legacies of racial trauma and oppression passed down from America’s history of slavery, and Jell-O pie exemplifies the pressures and contradictions of gender roles in an evolving modern society. We all know the warm comfort of the so-called all-American apple pie … but just how did pie become the symbol of a nation? In Sweet Land of Liberty: A History of America in 11 Pies, food writer Rossi Anastopoulo cracks open our relationship to pie with wit and good humor. She traces the pies woven into our history, following the evolution of our country across centuries of innovation and change and examining how America’s relationship with this iconic dessert impacted culture across eras—and vice versa. With corresponding recipes for each chapter, Sweet Land of Liberty is an entertaining, informative, and utterly charming food history for bakers, dessert lovers, and history aficionados alike. Ultimately, the story of pie is the story of America itself, and it’s time to dig in.
