  The short story is often viewed as an inferior relation to the Novel but it is an art in itself.  To take a story and distil its essence into fewer pages while keeping character and plot rounded and driven is not an easy task.  Many try and many fail.  James Fenimore Cooper was one to succeed creating miniature masterpieces with a lot to say. James Fenimore Cooper was born in Burlington, New Jersey on September 15, 1789.  He lived most of his life in Cooperstown, New York (established by his father William).   Although he attended Yale university, he was expelled and joined the US Navy as a Midshipman which was to provide much influence and research materials for his later writings. Although a Naval historian he is forever associated with one great book – Last Of The Mohicans.  His output was prolific and included the famed Leatherstocking series. He was wildly popular as an author with his blend of history and romance.  Here we bring you two of his short stories which are a fascinating insight to his view on life. He died of dropsy on September 14, 1851, the day before his 62nd birthday. Our readers are Richard Mitchley and Ghizela Rowe.

  E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776-1822) was a German Romantic author of fantasy and horror as well as a jurist, composer, music critic, draftsman and caricaturist. His stories were highly influential during the 19th century, and he is one of the major authors of the Romantic movement. 
  'Gambler's Luck' tells the story of a young German baron who is enjoying a streak of beginner's luck at the gambling tables. As his winnings mount up, the young man is gradually becoming sucked into the addictive habit of gambling. One night a stranger appears at the gambling table and watches the baron intently. The stranger appears night after night, until the baron is infuriated and challenges the man. A later chance meeting between the two results in the stranger relating a most unusual and gripping tale....

  William Edward Norris was born on the 18th November 1847, the son of Sir William Norris, the Chief Justice of Ceylon. 
   
  Norris was educated at Eton before studying law and being called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1874. 
   
  However, he never practiced law but instead pursued his dreams of a literary career. His first publication, ‘Heap of Money’ appeared in 1877.  He was prolific and wrote over sixty novels together with a small library of short stories.  Much of his work was serialised and published in magazines such as Cornhill ort Temple Bar before being released in book form. 
   
  William Edward Norris died on the 20th November at his home in Torquay, England at the age of 88.
