Summary

In The Republic, Plato constructs one of the foundational works of Western philosophy: a dramatic dialogue that moves from the question of justice in the soul to the design of a just city. Through Socrates' searching dialectic, the work examines education, political authority, poetry, metaphysics, and the famous theory of Forms, culminating in the allegory of the cave. Its literary style fuses philosophical argument with dramatic characterization, myth, irony, and speculative political theory, situating it within classical Athenian debates about democracy, sophistry, and civic virtue. Plato, an Athenian aristocrat and student of Socrates, wrote in the aftermath of political instability, the Peloponnesian War, and Socrates' execution in 399 BCE. These experiences deeply shaped his suspicion of unexamined public opinion and his concern with the moral formation of rulers and citizens. His Academy and dialogues reflect a lifelong attempt to preserve Socratic inquiry while transforming it into a systematic philosophical vision. The Republic is indispensable for readers interested in philosophy, politics, literature, or education. Challenging yet profoundly rewarding, it invites reflection on justice, truth, power, and the responsibilities of intellectual life.

In the mid-17th century, the heart of England fell victim to the mother of all epidemic catastrophes. The city of London was a ghost town, deserted by those who knew better than to hang around in a breeding ground that offered near-certain doom. Those who were confined within the city's borders had to make do with what they had, and the pitifully low morale seemed appropriate; the reek of rot and decomposition pervaded the air day in and day out, while corpses, young and old, riddled with strange swellings and blackened boils, littered the streets. For Londoners, to say it was hell would be an understatement.
With some bad luck and bad timing, a potential disaster awaited the city, and that finally came in September 1666. As it turned out, the Great Fire of London was so bad that one author who studied the blaze described it as “the perfect fire,” referring to the convergence in the largest city in England of spark, wood and wind in such a way that no one could stop the fire or even fight it effectively. John Evelyn, who had warned of the potential for a devastating fire given the layout of the city, noted that people seemed so stunned by the scope of the fire that they didn’t know what to do: “The conflagration was so universal, and the people so astonished, that from the beginning, I know not by what despondency or fate, they hardly stirred to quench it, so that there was nothing heard or seen but crying out and lamentation, running about like distracted creatures without at all attempting to save even their goods, such a strange consternation there was upon them.”
While the fire quickly spread throughout the heart of the city, the only thing that saved London’s suburbs was an ancient wall built around the city to keep the enemies of Rome out, not the fire in.  . By the time it was finished, most of the city’s homes and churches lay in ashes, and nearly 90% of the city’s citizens were left homeless.

Jimmy Reid: Walking with History is the long-anticipated posthumous autobiography of one of the most influential political voices of the twentieth century.
Compiled from fourteen years of in-depth conversations with journalist and close collaborator Brian McGeachan, the book captures Reid's life as trade union leader, orator, broadcaster and political activist. Best known internationally as the leading figure in the Upper Clyde Shipbuilders work-in of 1971-72, Reid helped secure thousands of jobs and demonstrated a powerful alternative to industrial conflict through workers' control and discipline.
Born in Govan during the Depression, Reid's life intersected with the major political currents of his age: communism, labour politics, nationalism and the struggle for social justice. His election as Rector of the University of Glasgow in 1971 led to his famous 'rat-race' address, later described by The New York Times as "the greatest speech since the Gettysburg Address." Its critique of alienation, inequality and moral compromise continues to resonate across generations.
Reid went on to become a respected journalist and BAFTA-award-winning broadcaster, engaging global audiences through documentaries and debates while remaining rooted in the experiences of working-class Scotland. With a Foreword by Neil Kinnock and contributions from figures including Tony Benn and Billy Connolly, Walking with History is both an intimate personal narrative and a vital historical record of modern Britain.

Life skills are those skills that enable individuals to effectively face the demands and challenges of daily life.
Among these, critical thinking is one of the fundamental requisites for the emancipation and participation in the social life of every human being.
But what do we actually mean when we talk about critical thinking? Is it possible to think of building tools for the development and evaluation of critical thinking?
The volume intends to answer these questions through theoretical and operational material. This is a hands-on book focused on developing your intelligence and critical thinking skills to make decisions. This is not an abstract story about thinking and I assure you that after reading it you will not be the same person who is reading these words.
With the critical thinking tools and strategies that I will teach you in this book, you will learn not to be deceived by cunning techniques of argumentation, to be sane, to strive to understand and appreciate the points of view of others, to analyze the reasoning with which you do not necessarily agree and change your points of view when you are faced with a better reasoning.
