Summary

Philip Henry Gosse was born in Gloucester on April 6th, 1810 and is remembered as one of the earliest natural scientists whose curiosity enabled much to be discovered and understood about our surroundings. Such was his enthusiasm for observation that he started the Victorian craze of aquariums. He tried to reconcile his religious zeal with an interpretation of scientific fact that almost cost him his reputation. Instead it propelled him forward to engage with ever more curiosity on all manner of subjects and to write carefully and draw beautifully of what he discovered.

In these tapes, Terence McKenna brings his considerable talents to bear on the problems of the global delemma, the melt-down of the values of western civilization and the future on the human species. McKenna calls for an "archaic revival" and a dissolution of the fictitious and synthetic boundaries erected by the historical male ego. He believes this dissolution to be enhanced by the ingestion of natural psychedelics. Whether you agree or disagree with McKenna's ideas, you will find them provocative, incisive, and above all, entertaining. Be prepared to marvel at the way a truly great and original mind works.

A New York Times bestseller! The untold story of the eccentric Wall Street tycoon and the circle of scientific geniuses who helped build the atomic bomb and defeat the Nazis—changing the course of history.Legendary financier, philanthropist, and society figure Alfred Lee Loomis gathered the most visionary scientific minds of the twentieth century—Albert Einstein, Werner Heisenberg, Niels Bohr, Enrico Fermi, and others—at his state-of-the-art laboratory in Tuxedo Park, New York, in the late 1930s. He established a top-secret defense laboratory at MIT and personally bankrolled pioneering research into new, high-powered radar detection systems that helped defeat the German Air Force and U-boats. With Ernest Lawrence, the Nobel Prize–winning physicist, he pushed Franklin Delano Roosevelt to fund research in nuclear fission, which led to the development of the atomic bomb. Jennet Conant, the granddaughter of James Bryant Conant, one of the leading scientific advisers of World War II, enjoyed unprecedented access to Loomis’ papers, as well as to people intimately involved in his life and work. She pierces through Loomis’ obsessive secrecy and illuminates his role in assuring the Allied victory.

A memoir of a year immersed in nature on a New England farm, by the national bestselling author of The Dog Who Came to Stay.  After a nearly fatal bout of appendicitis, Hal Borland decided to leave the city behind and move with his wife to a farmhouse in rural Connecticut. Their new home on one hundred acres inspired Borland to return to nature. In this masterpiece of American nature writing, he describes such wonders as the peace of a sky full of stars, the breathless beauty of blossoming plants, the way rain swishes as it hits a river, and the invigorating renewal brought by the changing seasons. The delights of nature as Borland observes them seem boundless, and his sense of awe is contagious.

The famed French naturalist Fabre covers a large variety of subjects in these 70 short but fascinating essays about insects, animals and nature in general. The translator explains in her foreword, "The young in heart and the pure in heart of whatever age will find themselves drawn to this incomparable story-teller, this reverent reveler of the awe-inspiring secrets of nature. The identity of the "Uncle Paul," who in this book and others of the series plays the story-teller's part, is not hard to guess; and the young people who gather about him to listen to his true stories from wood and field, from brook and hilltop, from distant ocean and adjacent millpond, are, without doubt, the author's own children, in whose companionship he delighted and whose education he conducted with wise solicitude." Go out and ask a bunch of your friends whether or not they have a preference for Coke and Pepsi. Some people say they taste the same, but most people will say they can taste the difference. You probably have some vague memory of the ads you’ve seen over the years for these products. Scantly clad, young attractive guys and girls in the prime of their fertile lives. Usually in party or holiday mode. Socialising. Relaxing. Wearing the latest trends in fashion, looking cool and having flirtatious fun.
Consciously there is not much going on, but branding doesn’t work in our conscious mind. And our unconcious mind sees a very different meaning here. All the advertisers have to do is trigger you to have very subtle feelings. So subtle, that you don’t even realise that they are there. Its the repetition of those subtle feelings that programs your unconscious mind to create the meaning. You see those messages all the time throughout your whole life. And at some point, eventually, you’re going to feel a desire to fit in with the cool kids (especially during your adolescent years). And in those moments, your uncurious has already primed you to associate those feelings with certain brands through all those repetitious messages you thought nothing of at the time.
The take home message is that they still have to make a product that tastes at least reasonably good of course. But remember, the taste is only part of it. The rest is in the psychology of how the brands are marketed to manipulate the feelings and meanings we attach to them which distorts how we think they taste.
So if advertisers can trick our brain into making us prefer products, then how can we take back the power and control? If you would like to know how exactly to trick your brain into craving healthy habits instead, then this book is for you.
