Eileen Atkins discusses playing Viola in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, in this ebook taken from Shakespeare On Stage: Volume 2 - Twelve Leading Actors on Twelve Key Roles.
In each volume of the Shakespeare On Stage series, a leading actor takes us behind the scenes of a landmark Shakespearean production, recreating in detail their memorable performance in a major role. They leads us through the choices they made in rehearsal, and how the character works in performance, shedding new light on some of the most challenging roles in the canon. The result is a series of individual masterclasses that will be invaluable for other actors and directors, as well as students of Shakespeare; and fascinating for audiences of the plays.
In this volume, Eileen Atkins discusses playing the role of Viola in two productions of Twelfth Night seventeen years apart at the Old Vic Theatre in 1961, directed by Colin Graham; and in a Prospect Theatre Company production in 1978, again at the Old Vic Theatre, directed by Toby Robertson.
This interview, together with the others in the series (with actors such as Simon Russell Beale, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart and Harriet Walter), is also available in the collection Shakespeare On Stage: Volume 2 - Twelve Leading Actors on Twelve Key Roles by Julian Curry, with a foreword by Nicholas Hytner.

“Art lovers will enjoy reading about and admiring the paintings of this talented regional southern artist.” —Lowcountry Companion

A product of the industrialized New South, Eugene Healan Thomason (1895–1972) made the obligatory pilgrimage to New York to advance his art education and launch his career. Like so many other aspiring American artists, he understood that the city offered unparalleled personal and professional opportunities—prestigious schools, groundbreaking teachers, and an intoxicating cosmopolitan milieu—for a promising young painter in the early 1920s. The patronage of one of the nation’s most powerful tycoons afforded him entrance to the renowned Art Students League, where he fell under the influence of the leading members of the Ashcan School, including Robert Henri, John Sloan, and George Luks. In all, Thomason spent a decade in the city, adopting—and eventually adapting—the Ashcan movement’s gritty realistic aesthetic into a distinctive regionalist style that utilized thick paint and simple subject matter.

Eugene Thomason returned to the South in the early 1930s, living first in Charlotte, North Carolina, before settling in a small Appalachian crossroads called Nebo. For the next thirty-plus years, he mined the rural landscape’s rolling terrain and area residents for inspiration, finding there an abundance of colorful imagery more evocative—and more personally resonant—than the urbanism of New York. Painting at the same time as such well known Regionalists as Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood, Eugene Thomason embraced and convincingly portrayed his own region, becoming the visual spokesman for that place and its people.

The holidays—that time between Thanksgiving and New Year's—jam more "together" time together than any other time during the year. And all that being together calls for movies to watch together to celebrate the season or movies to watch alone to survive the season. From such classics to enjoy as a family like A Christmas Story,It's a Wonderful Life, and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles to more offbeat films like Home for the Holidays (the Thanksgiving family reunion from hell) and Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (an R-rated Santa Claus origin story crossed with The Thing), Roger Ebert's full-length reviews suggest a wide range of titles sure to please everyone on your list. Also included are thoughtful films like John Huston's rendering of James Joyce's The Dead, a poignant look at life and Joyeux Noel, based on the true story of a spontaneous cease-fire between German and Allied troops on Christmas Eve 1914. As a bonus, in the enhanced version, more than half of the reviews include a clip of the movie's trailer.
