Summary

Published in 1904, "The Heart of Happy Hollow" by Paul Laurence Dunbar features sixteen short stories that provide rare glimpses into the lives of African Americans after the Civil War.
Through characters ranging from schemers to preachers, Paul Laurence Dunbar crafted a rare snapshot of long-lost communities and their poignant sensibilities. An author who achieved remarkable versatility, he draws on language that is by turns folksy and formal, putting forth controversial vernacular dialects as easily as he delivers a hauntingly poetic scene. In this collection, readers meet an influential entrepreneur who must navigate a treacherous political landscape; a Southern spiritual leader who must learn to accept the mores of his son, who was educated in the North; a reporter who restores hope in Santa Claus to a group of destitute siblings; and a host of other unique men and women giving voice to timeless themes.

Dunbar’s work has deservingly experienced a recent revival among commercial and scholarly audiences alike.
A captivating read, "The Heart of Happy Hollow" will introduce more book lovers to this revered storyteller and visionary.

The best-selling author of Harm Done and A Sight for Sore Eyes, Ruth Rendell has written dozens of gripping works under her own name and as Barbara Vine. She has received three Edgar Awards from the Mystery Writers of America and four Dagger Awards from England's Crime Writers Association. How frightening can a book be? Ambrose Ribbon, self-appointed editor and grammar police, is about to find out. He has spent years pointing out mistakes to writers and their publishers. So when he picks up the latest supernatural thriller from a best-selling author, its typos and lapses of logic are no surprise. Its story, however, slyly begins to poison Ribbon's life. Piranha to Scurfy is just the first story in this collection of nine gems from the grand mistress of suspense. Jenny Sterlin's finely crafted narration highlights the richness of each character and the subtle psychological shifts.

John Ackworth was the pen name of the Rev. Frederick R. Smith, a Methodist minister who was born in Snaith, Yorkshire, but spent much of his career as a circuit preacher in Lancashire. Clog Shop Chronicles was the first and most successful of his works. Set in the fictional 19th-century village of Beckside (said to be somewhere between Manchester and Bolton), the book consists of 12 tales of everyday life in a close-knit Methodist community, which continue into Beckside Lights (1897) and Doxy Dent (1899). Based on an entertaining group of characters who gather round the clog shop fire, the stories are sentimental at times, but Ackworth has a nice sense of irony and refrains from Methodist proselytizing. Ackworth was also a student of the Lancashire dialect and the spoken passages in his books are mostly written in a phonetic version of late 19th-century Bolton speech, which I have done my best to reproduce.
