A serial killer stalks post-WWII London in a gritty detective novel featuring Scotland Yard’s Inspector Troy.    An old flame has returned to Troy’s life: Kitty Stilton, wife of an American presidential hopeful. Private eye Joey Rork has been hired to make sure Kitty’s amorous liaisons with a rat pack crooner don’t ruin her husband’s political career. But he also wants to know why Kitty has been spotted with Danny Ryan, whose twin brothers, in addition to owning one of London’s hottest jazz clubs, are said to have inherited the crime empire of a fallen mobster.   Before Rork can find out, he meets a gruesome end. And he isn’t the only one: bodies have started turning up around London, dismembered in the same bizarre and horrifying way. Is it possible that the blood trail leads back to Troy’s own police force and into Troy’s own forgotten past? Flesh Wounds, a compulsively readable thriller, finds one of our most able storytellers at the height of his game.   “There are characters based on (or at least inspired by) everyone from Frank Sinatra to Meyer Lansky, enough dismembered bodies to satisfy the most morbid imaginations and frequent flashes of sly wit and social conscience that illuminate a vanished world.” —Publishers Weekly

    He’s death for hire…

Some people measure life in hours. Days. Weeks. I measure mine in kills. A covert military mission gone wrong robbed me of my memory and any link to my past. This is my existence now. I execute and survive. Nothing more, nothing less. I was ready to write Isabel Foster’s name in my ledger of unfortunate souls until she uttered the one word that could stop the bullet meant for her. My name.

She knows my face. She knows me. She’s the key to the memories I’m not sure I want back. Now nothing is simple. I still have a job to do, and my soul isn’t worth saving. I’m not the man she thinks I am. I can’t love her. And sparing her life puts us both in the crosshairs.

Harry Bosch has unwillingly retired from the LAPD where he was a star detective for several decades. Mickey Haller, his half-brother, asks him to take an objective look at a case which has the media in a frenzy and Haller’s client, former gangbanger “Da’Quan”, tried and convicted on all sides long before the trial even takes place. At first Bosch flat out refuses to even consider the case, feeling it would be a betrayal of all his years on the LAPD force but quickly comes to the realization that if there is the slightest possibility Haller’s client is innocent then a murder is walking free with none the wiser.

Throughout the novel, Bosch is seen questioning himself and his long-held beliefs about the roles of the police and the legal prosecution, versus the “dark side” of the law, the defense. Despite the introspection, Bosch never vacillates from his core value: put the right criminal behind bars for the crime they committed. Haller’s aim is to get his client’s arrest dismissed and is focused on spinning the facts of the case to fulfil that. Bosch, however, makes it clear to Haller and to himself that the truth is what matters and goes after it, letting the dice fall where it may – even if that means Da’Quan goes down.

In the rough waters of the North Sea, two sailors fight to save Britain Charles Carruthers is languishing in the crushing heat of a London summer when an old university chum named Davies throws him a lifeline, inviting him on a yachting expedition in the North Sea. It sounds like a lark, but Carruthers finds that the Dulcibella is hardly a yacht, and Davies’s trip is no pleasure cruise. Off the coast of the mysterious Frisian Islands, he has spotted a German fleet, supposedly engaged in hunting for buried treasure. Battling the elements, the two Englishmen find themselves surrounded by the German navy, which is using the fogs of the North Sea to disguise something monstrous—the Kaiser’s plot to launch a sneak attack on the British Isles. Published more than a decade before World War I began, this groundbreaking spy novel inspired a young Winston Churchill to reinvigorate Britain’s naval defenses, and it remains just as stirring today. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.
