Summary

A cardiac technician takes you to the front lines of emergency medicine—from tragic car accidents to gunshot wounds—in this “fast-moving” memoir (Booklist). This book takes the reader to the front lines of medicine, from a serious automobile accident on a dark country road to a woman in cardiac arrest to a young man with near‑fatal gunshot wounds. For these patients and countless others, treatment cannot wait until they are wheeled into a distant emergency room. If lives are to be salvaged, care must begin with the life‑saving skills of Emergency Medical Technicians. “I could never work on a rescue squad,” is a statement the author has heard over and over throughout her years of squad service and readily admits it once described her own feelings. “If I can do it, so can you,” is her response to those whose fear and self‑doubt hold them back. “Anything is possible.”EMT: Beyond the Lights and Sirens is more than a personal account of Pat Ivey’s rescue squad experiences. It is a story of courage and hope and letting go of past losses. It is a book for anyone who has ever struggled to go beyond who they are. Step aboard the ambulance. Witness the tender moments amidst tragedy. Experience the joy and the anguish, and share the tears and laughter of volunteer rescue squad personnel who respond around the clock to the cries of others. In this heartwarming and compelling book, Pat Ivey takes the reader beyond the lights and sirens on a journey they will never forget.

Giulia Farnese, a woman who traverses time to find, in this novel, her redemption.
Her real story is tachat of a woman who goes far beyond the figure of Sponsa Christi as she was known throughout the world.
The writer traces the profile of a strong woman who, once free from the trammels of a family that raised her to be obedient, rises from her ashes and the damnatio memoriæ to become the mater and the domina of the feud of Carbognano.
With an absorbing prose, and based on an historical plot of true events, the author gives back to La Bella the dignity that historical documentation has always overlooked, preferring to chase after fifth century gossip.

Dumas's 'Celebrated Crimes' was not written for children. The novelist has spared no language--has minced no words--to describe the violent scenes of a violent time.In some instances facts appear distorted out of their true perspective, and in others the author makes unwarranted charges. The careful, mature reader, for whom the books are intended, will recognize, and allow for, this fact. Summary from publishers note.

A memoir by the legendary entertainment lawyer, “an advisor/pal to so many stars of stage and screen that the dazzle will leave you blinking” (Dan Wakefield, national-bestselling author).   For more than forty years, Donald C. Farber forged a path through New York’s literary, theatrical, and celebrity circles. As Kurt Vonnegut’s attorney, literary agent, and close friend, he offers a rare portrait of Vonnegut that is both candid and entertaining. A renowned entertainment lawyer with a largely famous clientele and a highly acclaimed author in his own right, Farber provides colorful anecdotes that detail the daily realities of working with Vonnegut from the perspective of the person who knew him best.  I Hated to Do It is also “an amazing account of the one survivor of his company in WWII, a man who believed in an off-Broadway musical The Fantasticks (that is still paying off his investment), and his journey in theatrical law . . . Don is a great storyteller who keeps you always entranced” (Dan Wakefield, national-bestselling author of Going All the Way).

Twenty years ago, now, I attempted (but was not especially successful in the task) to establish upon the personal knowledge that my own residence as a pupil in the historical Pensionnat in the Rue d'Isabelle, at Bruxelles gave me of the facts of Charlotte Brontë's relationships to Monsieur and Madame Heger, right impressions about the experiences and emotions she underwent between 1842 and 1846, and that supply the key and clue to the right interpretation of her genius. Every opinion I then ventured to state, not upon the authority of any special power of divination or of psychological insight of my own, but solely upon the authority of this personal knowledge of Monsieur and Madame Heger in my early girlhood, and also of the information I owed to the friendship and kind assistance given me, in my endeavour to rectify false judgments, by the Heger family, has quite recently, not only been confirmed, but established upon entirely incontrovertible evidence, by the generous gift made to English readers throughout the world of the key needed to unlock once and for ever the tragical but romantic 'Secret' of Charlotte Brontë. - Summary by Frederika MacDonald

"Hilarious & Heartbreaking" ✮✮✮✮✮Will there be light at the end of the birth canal?
Does the word ‘endometriosis’ make you want to stick a fork in your eye? No?
Then perhaps this book isn’t for you. It’s funny, and (sometimes alarmingly) frank. It contains an impressive array of synonyms for ‘vagina’ and it’s certainly NSFW.
It’s about having a devil womb and a hot knife lodged in a shoulder. It’s about becoming blackly bitter and twisted in infertility, and then slowly finding a way to untwist.
It’s part memoir, part dark comedy, wrapped up loosely as a journal full of TMI and quirk.
Let me put it this way: If Helen Fielding and Marian Keyes were to go through IVF, and use Caitlin Moran as a surrogate, this book would be their baby.
'The Underachieving Ovary' is an honest and satisfying must-read for anyone battling endometriosis or infertility. Start reading it today.
    What readers are saying:

"This book is just so brilliantly written. So funny. So sad ... a page-turner of a suspense story: I am in awe. Should this not be an Oprah choice?" -- Erica Platter

Steve Porter uses his experience on the family farm to explain his "50-Percent Theory of Life" for NPR's This I Believe series.
This I Believe is a National Public Radio program that features Americans, from the famous to the unknown, completing the thought that begins with the series title. The pieces that make up the program compel listeners to re-think not only what and how they have arrived at their own personal beliefs, but also the extent to which they share them with others.
Featuring a star-studded list of contributors that includes John McCain, Isabel Allende, and Colin Powell, as well as pieces from the original 1950's series including Helen Keller and Jackie Robinson, the This I Believe collection also contains essays by a Brooklyn lawyer, a woman who sells yellow pages advertising in Fort Worth, TX and a man who serves on the state of Rhode Island's parole board. The result is a stirring, funny and always provocative trip inside the minds and hearts of a diverse group of Americans whose beliefs, and the incredibly varied ways in which they choose to express them, reveal the American spirit at its best.
