Summary

Guidebook of walking and cycling routes in County Durham. The 40 day-walks, ranging between 3 and 11 mile in length, explore all corners of this varied county. The selected walks take in highlights such as Beamish, Durham City, Tan Hill and High Force.
Featuring OS mapping, step-by-step route descriptions, as well as information on the history of the region, the guidebook details everything you need to walk in the region.
The 10 cycle routes range between 5 and 34 miles long, and many of the routes can be linked together to create longer rides perhaps taken over a few days. All of the cycle routes are on old railway trackbeds that offer a network of traffic free paths for walkers, cyclists and horse-riders. County Durham is remarkably varied - wild moorlands, gentle countryside, riverside walks, nature reserves, heritage sites, railway paths and the low cliff coast, passing Roman forts, ancient churches and castles.
Available since: 02/09/2015.

One of hockey’s most colourful characters, from hockey’s most colourful era, tells all

Gilles Gratton was not a typical pro hockey player. He refused to don his equipment and man his net if the planets were not properly aligned. He skated naked at practice. He created one of hockey’s most famous goalie masks based on his astrological sign. He fought with coaches and management, speaking his mind to his detriment. Sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll ruled his life, not stopping pucks. Truthfully? He never really wanted to be an NHL goaltender; he wanted to be Tibetan monk. And so, he quit hockey to seek enlightenment.

Now, in his autobiography, Gratton teams up with author Greg Oliver to tell his wild and at times, yes, loony story: from his early days in Montreal, where his brother Norm Gratton became an NHL player, too; through his stints with the OHA’s Oshawa Generals, the Ottawa Nationals and Toronto Toros of the rogue WHA, and the St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers in the NHL.

Walter Smith was one of the most respected managers in British football. This insightful biography casts a reflective and analytical eye over his life and career, examining this shrewd professional through the many highs and lows that he has experienced as a player and manager. He enjoyed an illustrious career in management at Rangers, joining the Souness revolution in 1987, winning nine successive league titles, a domestic treble in the 1992-93 season and winning both the Scottish Cup and League Cup three times. In 1998, Smith accepted a position in England with Everton, where he was the manager until 2002, before being reunited with Ferguson at Old Trafford in 2004. In December of that year, Smith was appointed as Scotland manager and his effort subsequently earned him the title of apos;Scot of the Yearapos; at the prestigious Glenfiddich apos;Spirit of Scotlandapos; awards in 2006.
Midway through the qualifying rounds for Euro 2008, however, and with the Scots leading their group, he controversially accepted an offer to return to Ibrox in January 2007. Upon returning to Glasgow, Smith led Rangers to the UEFA Cup Final and triumph in the Scottish Cup in 2008, a domestic League and Cup double in 2009 and another double - this time in the domestic League and League Cup - in 2010. He retired from management in 2011 and died in October 2021.
