Summary

This study examines the association between some governance variables and the risk of default of family and non-family firms. The paper also discusses the nature of family control and the differences to non-family control and their link to firm’s performance. The most relevant indicators utilised by the authors for identifies the probability of default are based on quantitative indicators, but the presence of independent directors or the managements turnover (in particular the change of CEO) are more important for the future life of the firms, especially in the crisis periods. These governance variables are more relevant for the firms that are controlled by founder’s family and in case of succession transition, that is one critical period for the firm. In this study we try to confirm the agency problems in family businesses highlighted by the literature as the relationship between Z-score and the presence of independent directors, the turnover of the directors and the change of CEO. Especially if the latter is also Chairman. We reaffirm in this analysis the necessary distinction between the capital and the company management.

Why is our society so unequal? Why, despite their small numbers, do the rich dominate policy and politics even in democratic countries? Why is it so difficult for working people to organize around common interests? How do we begin to build a more equal and democratic society?Vivek Chibber provides a clear and accessible map of how capitalism works, how it limits the power of working and oppressed people, and how to overcome those limits. The capitalist economy generates incredible wealth but also injustice. Those who own the factories, hotels, and farms always have an advantage over the people who rely on that ownership class for their livelihoods. This inequality in power and income is reflected in the operation of the state, where capitalists are able to exert their will even under relatively democratic conditions. The most important reason is that states depend on the employment and profits from capitalist enterprise for both finances and legitimacy. Every meaningful victory for working people has been won through collective struggle but collective action is very difficult to coordinate. In the final section of the book, Chibber walks the listener through some of the historical attempts to build socialism and presents a vision of how we might, perhaps against the odds, build a socialist future.

The History of the Standard Oil Company is a book written by journalist Ida Tarbell in 1904. It was an exposé of the Standard Oil Company, run at that time by oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller the richest figure in America's history. Originally serialized in 19 parts in McClure's magazine, the book was a seminal example of muckraking, and inspired many other journalists to write about trusts, large businesses that (in the absence of strong antitrust law in the 19th century) attempted to gain monopolies in various industries. The History of the Standard Oil Company was credited with hastening the breakup of Standard Oil, which came about in 1911.

It turns out that it really should not be. Assuming that you've been able to collect your thoughts, write them down, and have had the time to practice what you want to say, then everything should go ok.

However, I suspect that you'd like to do better than "ok". As long as you are taking the time to create and practice a speech, you sure want the speech to make an impact on your audience. You want to be able to deliver a great speech.

It turns out that you can do this, you just need to know how to go about doing it. That's exactly what this book is going to do. It turns out that your posture is also important and so we should talk about that. Finally, not every speech is the same. We'll talk about how you can get ready for speeches that you give in unique situations.

In the end, you'll have a very good insight into how you can make your next presentation the best that you've ever given. Ultimately the impact of your speech will be determined by the quality of your presentation.
