Summary

Nori Jemil's ground-breaking practical photography book considers not just how to get better images, but also why and when to take them. It guides you to becoming a more confident and reflective travel photographer, as well as covering all the technical knowhow needed. Taking a journey around the seven continents, each chapter focuses on the main areas of travel imagery, from people and landscape to architecture and adventure. Bite-size advice on how to get the best from your camera is contextualised throughout the book, so you learn as you go.

Travel photography has exploded across the world thanks to the huge leap in quality of both mobile phone cameras and bridge cameras, as well as the ease of public posting on social media. Award-winning travel photographer Nori Jemil has been riding the wave of these advances and has created a 'how to' guide with a difference. Her book is not an attempt to replicate other reference works on the subject, top-loading technical information and addressing an expert reader. Nor does it focus on gadgetry - the proliferation of new hardware means camera-based information can become obsolete quite quickly. Instead it is a travel companion, a book that can be read for the prose and stories, as well as the information it contains. It covers the main elements of travel photography in eleven sections, including advice from some of the best travel photographers working around the world. Technical information is embedded, given in the context of each shot, but personal travel stories are at the heart of every chapter, linked to key travel images as well as the full camera settings and detail of how and why each photo was taken.

Nori Jemil is an award-winning photographer, writer, teacher and videographer. Her work has appeared in publications including National Geographic Traveller, BBC Travel, Adventure.com and Conde Nast Traveller. Over the past decade has won numerous awards, including Travel Photograph of the Year from Wanderlust travel magazine, and Travel Photographer of the Year from the British Guild of Travel Writers.

Can a two-career couple really pick up stakes and move to Provence?Keith and Val had a dream-to live in Provence, the land of brilliant sunlight, charming hilltop villages, and the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean. But there were two problems: they weren't French speakers and they had full-time jobs. So they came up with a plan . . .Follow their adventures (and misadventures) as they quit their jobs, become consultants, and split their time between two countries. Laugh along as they build a life in Provence, slowly mastering a new language and making friends with the locals over long meals and just a bit too much wine. This light and breezy memoir is full of wry observations on France, like the power of cheese to sway elections, the right and wrong ways for men to kiss each other, and the law requiring that blood donors must speak French. If you've ever dreamed of changing gears and learning what joie de vivre is really all about, you won't want to miss this delightful book.

Gripping true adventure stories - from the Mojave to the Antarctic - reveal one woman's wild affair with the Earth
For Lucy Jane Bledsoe, wilderness had always been a source of peace. But during one disastrous solo trip in the wintry High Sierra she came face to face with a crisis: the wilderness no longer felt like home. The Ice Cave recounts Bledsoe's wilderness journeys as she recovers her connection with the wild and discovers the meanings of fear and grace.
These are Bledsoe's gripping tales of fending off wolves in Alaska, encountering UFOs in the Colorado Desert, and searching for mountain lions in Berkeley. Her memorable story "The Breath of Seals" takes readers to Antarctica, the wildest continent on earth, where she camped out with geologists, biologists, and astrophysicists. These fresh and deeply personal narratives remind us what it means to be simply one member of one species, trying to find food and shelter - and moments of grace - on our planet.

A stunning, in-depth guide to fifty more of the world’s greatest golf courses, selected by people deeply connected to the sport. With this follow-up to his bestselling Fifty Places to Play Golf Before You Die, Chris Santella interviews fifty luminaries in the golf world to uncover some of the sport’s hidden gems. Golf industry insiders—from seasoned touring professionals (Amy Alcott, Fred Funk) to journalists and photographers (James Dodson, Brian Morgan) to golf course architects (Robert von Hagge, Bob Harrison) to travel specialists (Gordon Dalgleish, Mike Lardner)—offer their favorite courses around the world and describe what makes them so spectacular. Their experiences bring the venues to life for both ardent golfers and armchair travelers. The golf courses featured here range from the windswept peninsula of Old Head off the coast of Ireland to the sultry landscape of the recently inaugurated Ho Chi Minh Golf Trail in Vietnam to the privileged putting surfaces of California’s Cypress Point and Maryland’s Congressional Country Club. Along the way, Santella shares vivid descriptions of the courses, funny and touching anecdotes, and enough “If You Go” information for golfers to begin planning that once-in-a-lifetime getaway. The texts are complemented by more than forty vivid photographs that capture the allure of these unforgettable golf destinations.

Lara Marlowe, the Washington correspondent of The Irish Times, has witnessed more than her share of history in three decades as a foreign correspondent. She has reported with clarity and fearlessness on the main conflicts of our era, from the civil war in Lebanon to the break-up of Yugoslavia, the US invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq and the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. She has been outspoken in her criticism of the often cruel and misguided actions of the world's leading powers, and invariably seeks out the views of civilians caught up in wars that are not of their making. The human cost of conflict and the absurdity of war come through her work, time and again. In this stunning and moving collection, Lara Marlowe has chosen her finest pieces of writing from her years as a foreign correspondent in some of the world's most troubled countries - notably Lebanon, the Palestinian territories, Iraq and Haiti - as well as the power centers of Paris and Washington. She brings her keen insight to bear on some intractable problems, and shares with the reader the terror of living in a war zone. There are lighter moments too: a wonderful house-warming party in Beirut during a lull in artillery bombardments; meetings with talented celebrities, including Carla Bruni, Isabelle Adjani and Marcel Marceau; the simple delight of the companionship of cats. This is a superb collection from a writer at the height of her powers.
