Summary

Critical, independent voices are seldom found within the citadels of international finance. That's what makes Nomi Prins unique. During fifteen years as an executive at skyscraping banks like Goldman Sachs, Bear Stearns, and Lehman Brothers, Prins never lost her ability to see the broader picture. She walked away from the game in 2002 out of disgust with the burgeoning corporate corruption, just as its magnitude was becoming clear to the public. In this acclaimed exposé, named one of the best books of 2004 by The Economist, Barron's, Library Journal, and The Progressive, Prins provides fascinating firsthand details of day-to-day life in the financial leviathans, with all its rich absurdities. She demonstrates how the much-publicized fraud of recent years resulted from deregulation that trashed the rules of responsible corporate behavior, and not simply the unbridled greed of a select few. While the stock market roared on the back of phony balance sheets, executives made out like bandits and Congress looked the other way. Worse yet, as the new foreword to the paperback edition makes clear, everything remains in place for a repeat performance.

The history of money tells us of the development of the means through which transactions can be carried out with the help of a medium of exchange. From eons now, man has been exchanging goods for a certain price. This price came either in the form of other goods or money. The interesting journey of money from barter products to bitcoin and electronic money covers different ways in which societies and cultures perceived money.
There were a lot of things that were used as a medium of exchange before money made its appearance. These included livestock, vegetables, grains which were useful for the people. But then there were other things like cowrie shells and beads which were used for money solely because they were very attractive. Precious metals and stones were also used as a medium of exchange because of their usefulness and attractiveness.
In the modern world, money has gained a different aspect. It does not require an exchange of produce or commodities, instead, it relies on the exchange of currencies. Money is available today in different forms like currency notes, coins, credit cards, and electronic funds.
In as early as 350 BC, the Greek philosopher Aristotle spoke about the importance of an object for bartering it or selling it. The first official currency is said to be minted in 600 BC in Lydia which is modern day Western Turkey. But there has been evidence that money may have existed before this in various other cultures and cities.
Gradually, the idea of giving monetary value to a relatively insignificant object in order to use it as money became a popular idea. This gave rise to bank notes which are otherwise just a simple piece of paper with no value.

What is great leadership? What separates the merely competent leaders from those rare individuals who leave a lasting impression on everyone around them?

As one of the world's most in-demand CEO coaches and top leadership gurus, John Mattone has worked with some of our brightest business minds — Apple's Steve Jobs, Pepsi's Roger Enrico, and Nielsen's Armando Uriegas — and he's identified the key qualities that, together, make up the mindset of great leadership.

In The Intelligent Leader, Mattone lays out an accessible, practical, and compelling path that anyone can take to become the kind of leader that brings enrichment to the lives of others, enjoys a more fulfilling life, and leaves a lasting legacy. Each chapter uses a variety of real-world examples, tools, and assessments to explore one of Mattone's seven dimensions of Intelligent Leadership, including thinking differently, thinking big; having a mindset of duty vs. a mindset of entitlement; leveraging your gifts and addressing your gaps; and having the courage to execute with pride, passion, and precision.
