Summary

An almost-been in his twenties, former actor Orson Beck can barely afford rent and child support on the pittance he earns at the grocery store job that was supposed to be temporary. His ex-wife left him for a more successful actor, and he’s too broke to be the kind of father he wants to be.

Orson is about to give up his dreams of stardom and focus on being a single dad when he receives a mysterious invitation in the mail: he’s been nominated for the Onyx List, an honor that could revive his career … or kill it forever.

When Orson makes the cut, his sudden success forces him to question every story he’s ever told himself about who he is. He isn’t sure what he really wants anymore -- but the ultrapowerful agents who’ve taken him on are already working behind the scenes to make sure he gets it, no matter what the cost.

By the time Orson realizes that his agents see his friends and family as obstacles to his success and have been working behind the scenes to isolate him, it’s too late to object to being a pawn in their Hollywood games.

As his newfound fame and fortune grows, will Orson destroy everyone he’s ever loved to keep it?

A founding father of the American conservative movement, Russell Kirk (1918–94) was also a renowned and bestselling writer of fiction. Kirk’s focus was the ghost story, or “ghostly tale” – a “decayed art” of which he considered himself a “last remaining master.” Old House of Fear, Kirk’s first novel, revealed this mastery at work. Its 1961 publication was a sensation, outselling all of Kirk’s other books combined, including The Conservative Mind, his iconic study of American conservative thought. A native of Michigan, Kirk set Old House of Fear in the haunted isles of the Outer Hebrides, drawing on his time in Scotland as the first American to earn a doctorate of letters from the University of St. Andrews. The story concerns Hugh Logan, an attorney sent by an aging American industrialist to Carnglass to purchase his ancestral island and its castle called the Old House of Fear. On the island, Logan meets Mary MacAskival, a red-haired ingénue and love interest, and the two face off against Dr. Edmund Jackman, a mystic who has the island under his own mysterious control. This new edition features an introduction by James Panero, Executive Editor of The New Criterion.

In the darkest months of WWII, as the Nazi forces creep across Europe like the plague, SS-Gruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich uncovers a secret weapon with the potential to permanently change the course of the war.
Legend tells of a remote castle hidden deep within the Carpathian Mountains. Beneath it dwells an ancient evil: a master vampire, known only as the Count, and his six beautiful concubines. On Hitler's orders, Heydrich is tasked with finding them and bringing them back to Berlin.
However, while awakening vampires is one thing, controlling them is quite another, particularly ones that are ravenous and full of lust after years of slumber. After all, strong, healthy young soldiers provide such better sustenance—and fun—than malnourished prisoners or demoralized citizens.
Very soon, the Nazis will learn exactly who the true "master race" is. And to their horror, they will discover that in their blind grasping for domination, they may have just unleashed hell on earth.
