Summary

This collection includes: The Mantle (AKA The Cloak), The Nose, Memoirs of a Madman, A May Night, and The Viy. According to Wikipedia: "Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol (31 March 1809[4] – 4 March 1852[5]) was a Ukrainian-born Russian humorist, dramatist, and novelist. He is considered the father of modern Russian Realism, but, at the same time, his work is very much in the genre of Romanticism. His early works, such as Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka, were heavily influenced by Ukrainian culture and folklore. His more mature writing satirised political corruption in the Russian Empire, leading to his exile. After briefly flirting with conversion to Roman Catholicism while in Italy, on his return to Russia Gogol immersed himself in the Russian Orthodox Church. The novels Taras Bul'ba (1835; 1842 [revised edition]) and Dead Souls (1842), the play The Government Inspector (1836, 1842), and the short stories "Diary of a Madman", "The Nose", and "The Overcoat" (1842) are among his best-known works. With their scrupulous and scathing realism, ethical criticism, as well as philosophical depth, they remain some of the most important works ever written."

In this tale of "Menehune," we are introduced to Melvin, a young orphan with an eccentric appearance – his bald, oddly shaped and oversized head sets him apart and leaves him lonely and alone. Despite his physical differences, Melvin possesses an unyielding spirit and a heart brimming with curiosity.
Life takes an unexpected turn when Melvin, while running for his life, finds himself aboard a seedy pirate ship. The captain of the ship, a grizzled seafarer with a hidden softness beneath his tough exterior, takes a liking to him. Their friendship transcends the boundaries of age and circumstance.
The captain leaves Melvin at their next stop, on the shores of Tinian. Against a backdrop of turquoise waters and lush landscapes, his arrival in Tinian brings unforeseen challenges, leading him to a mental hospital outside of Honolulu. Within the hospital, Melvin befriends the compassionate case worker, Faith. The hospital staff, including the Tongan people, become his extended family, offering him the acceptance he's always yearned for. But Melody, another patient within the hospital, leaves an indelible mark on Melvin's heart. Despite her blindness, or maybe because of it, their friendship blooms.
A theme of love weaves through this story. Love that transcends appearances and defies societal norms, love that embraces differences and celebrates individuality. As Melvin's connections deepen and his relationships flourish, he discovers that true family isn't always defined by blood; it's found in the bonds we create with those who see us for who we truly are.
"Menehune" is a poignant exploration of the human experience – a tale of resilience, acceptance, and the transformative power of friendship. Through the eyes of Melvin, you'll look beyond the surface and embrace the beauty of the soul. This heartwarming journey reminds us that in a world often marked by division, the threads of connection and love are what truly bind us together.

Malika Moustadraf (1969–2006) is a feminist icon in contemporary Moroccan literature, celebrated for her stark interrogation of gender and sexuality in North Africa. Blood Feast is the complete collection of Moustadraf’s published short fiction: haunting, visceral stories by a master of the genre. A teenage girl suffers through a dystopian rite of passage?,? a man with kidney disease makes desperate attempts to secure treatment?, and a mother schemes to ensure her daughter passes a virginity test. Delighting in vibrant sensory detail and rich slang, Moustadraf takes an unflinching look at the gendered body, social class, illness, double standards, and desire, as lived by a diverse cast of characters. Blood Feast is a sharp provocation to patriarchal power and a celebration of the life and genius of one of Morocco’s preeminent writers.

She thought they would stay in touch, but he disappeared without a word. Arianna thought she’d moved on. But when Will shows up at a family dinner with her older—and very protective—brother, she’s angry and confused. How could he possibly forget to mention that he was friends with her brother? No one knows about their shared past, and Arianna wants to keep things that way, no matter how tempting Will is. When he walked away a year ago, Will thought it was for the best. Staying away from Arianna is the smart thing to do, especially with how protective her older brother—his friend and fellow soldier—can be. Time and distance will work wonders when you’re trying to stay away from someone. Now that he’s seen her again, he forgets all about doing the smart thing. He’ll just have to first convince her to let go of her anger and give him another chance. Will isn’t above playing the nostalgia card, and when he challenges Arianna to a sexy game of truth or dare, she can’t resist. Neither one is ready to tell the world what they’re doing, but how long can they possibly keep things a secret when there are Donovans ready to meddle around every corner?
