Summary

On the heels of a breakup, author Nathan Pettijohn rents an RV and takes off on the road with his dog to explore the Pacific Northwest for the month of October. Along their journey, Pettijohn and his dog Raphael, or "Hafa," meet with locals in small towns and stay at sites ranging from national parks, trailer parks, and campgrounds, to parking lots and open spaces. While going to a number of iconic bucket-list road trip stops, Pettijohn shares his views on everything from dog training to dating apps, in a modern exploration of life on the road today in America for adventurers, vagabonds, and dog lovers.

The author of the international bestseller Almost French sets sail to explore a new paradise: Tahiti.

Sarah Turnbull turns her characteristically lush prose to this spectacular landscape as she describes adjusting to another new culture. In All Good Things, Frédéric's work takes the couple to an island near Tahiti-but there is more to the move than simply a job opportunity. In this seeming paradise, where each day begins with a swim in the magical waters of the lagoon, Sarah seeks creative rejuvenation. "Book and baby: I'd never dared speak them so boldly, but my aims for the next two years were clear in my mind before we moved."

Turnbull transports the listener with her vivid, evocative descriptions of the natural environment while ruminating on the paradise myth and the special nature of islands-as well as the long-ago visit to the territory by Henri Matisse. Told with heartbreaking honesty and full of jewels of insight, All Good Things is a story about love and longings in one of the most beautiful and isolated places on earth.

    Journey Without Maps

    Graham Greene

The British author embarks on an awe-inspiring trek through 1930s West Africa in “one of the best travel books [of the twentieth] century” (The Independent).   When Graham Greene left Liverpool in 1935 for what was then an Africa unmarked by colonization, it was to leave the known transgressions of his own civilization behind for those unknown. First by cargo ship, then by train and truck through Sierra Leone, and finally on foot, Greene embarked on a dangerous and unpredictable 350-mile, four-week trek through Liberia with his cousin, and a handful of servants and bearers, into a world where few had ever seen a white man. For Greene, this odyssey became as much a trip into the primitive interiors of the writer himself as it was a physical journey into a land foreign to his experience.   “No one who reads this book will question the value of Greene’s experiment, or emerge unshaken by the penetration, the richness, the integrity of this moving record.” —The Guardian

This curious collection of maps explores the unique personalities of 28 cities around the world, shedding light on the strange and marvelous ways in which humans interact with the places they call home. Artist and creative cartographer Adam Dant dissects Manhattan in an anatomical diagram, traces the form of a Picasso nude in the streets of Monaco, and transforms the crisscrossing paths of boats on the Bosporus into the nerves of Istanbul. Dant draws on the history, culture, and geography of each city and on the beguiling aesthetic of antique maps to create gorgeous works of cartographic art. Witty, insightful, and adorned with a gold foil–stamped cover, this book will capture the imaginations of travelers, map enthusiasts, history buffs, and dreamers.
