Summary

LAST BOAT TO YOKOHAMA: THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF BEATE SIROTA GORDON tells a story of both tragedy and grandeur in the twentieth century. It recounts the life and work of Beate Sirota Gordon: the influence of her father, Leo Sirota, one of the greatest pianists of his generation; her secret work ensuring women’s equality while helping to develop the post-WWII Japanese constitution—at the age of 22; her broad influence on hundreds of Western artists such as Robert Wilson, David Byrne and Peter Sellars—who were introduced to leading contemporary Asian music, dance, theater and visual artists through her extraordinary cross-cultural efforts. The brilliant pianist Leo Sirota, a Ukranian Jew, was forced by early 20th-century war to escape Russia and settle in Austria, where Beate was born. In 1929, he found a welcome home when he emigrated to Japan with his wife and young daughter at the invitation of the Imperial Academy of Music in Tokyo. There, as a professor, he trained many of the country’s musical elite and performed to packed concert halls. Nevertheless, because of his Jewish faith, he spent the last years of World War II in detention, under the harsh watch of the Japanese military police, suffering hunger,

Bill Laar and Jackie Holderness' Reclaiming the Curriculum examines the nature of a broad-ranging, content-rich primary school curriculum and presents case studies that exemplify how it can be effectively delivered. Many schools believe that the value of their work is undermined by a test-driven agenda that limits the breadth of the education they provide and who can blame them? In Reclaiming the Curriculum Bill and Jackie inspire teachers to escape such narrow confines by unearthing a rich seam of case study examples from schools who are broadening their provision with specialist content that transcends the core curriculum: taking pupils into the realms of exploration and enquiry while also providing for higher attainment in the core subjects. Featuring a variety of exciting initiatives, ranging from the development of an IT-enabled collaborative learning space to the artful application of storytelling across the curriculum, this book will embolden primary schools to identify and enhance their own creative practice and more effectively prepare pupils for the tests of life, not a life of tests. The 18 case studies written by a diverse line-up of contributors including school leaders, teachers and special-ist coaches are sourced from a mixture of different settings and offer detailed descriptions of the initiatives' unique backgrounds: their genesis and inspiration, their underpinning aims and objectives, and the ways in which they were resourced, realised and, eventually, evaluated. At the beginning of each chapter, Bill and Jackie briefly summarise the educa-tional value of each example of curriculum development, the significance of specific aspects and the ways in which they are likely to help maintain full and relevant learning. Each case study then presents the contributors' first-hand perspectives as they: describe in detail the structure that underpins the provision including the number of staff involved and the time and resources allocated; share interesting insights into the level of pupil involvement and, where relevant, the extent of parental and community participation; paint a vivid picture of how the initiatives have been made compatible with their school's wider educational programme; and provide practical guidance, useful links and relevant resources to aid readers' own pursuit of curriculum development. Suitable for primary school teachers and leaders.

    This is a 4-book Bundle!
    Book 1: Multiple Personality Disorder
If you know what multiple personality disorder is, you probably wonder how this disorder develops, how it manifests itself, and what can be done. This quick guide will help you get to the bottom of these questions.
    Book 2: Manic Depression
What if you could begin to overcome your depression by getting the right information? Wouldn’t that be something worth investing into? Depression is a serious condition, and a manic depression takes it even a step further. It would be better to comprehend what you or a loved one is going through than to remain in the dark and not know what to do. I am not saying that it will be an easy process, nor will it always be brief. Healing takes time, and perhaps the condition is so severe that medication is necessary, as well.
    Book 3: Suicide
In this elaborate study, the specific issues that relate to suicidal tendencies are addressed. Causes and consequences come to light, and comparisons are made between countries, individuals, and triggers that influence a person in a depressive state to contemplate the unthinkable.
    Book 4: Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a mental disorder with lots of complications. Although it cannot be completely overcome in the sense that the disorder will disappear, there are ways to cope with and reduce the symptoms. The author has experienced the struggles with schizophrenics himself, and relates the information and clinical research to his own experiences with one of his friends.

This is the second in this series of Core Words. After learning the first 100, this audiobook has the core 500 words used in the SATs and GREs over the last 50 years. This audiobook is best used after the Core 100 words are mastered so as not to intimidate the student. The first audiobook is quick and brief, just focusing on the core knowledge needed for doing well in this area of the test as well as becoming a better reader and writer. Choate learned that the first step in learning a subject should be an easy accessible one. Most Test Prep books strut across the stage with length and depth that is intimidating to anyone from a Ph.D. on down. Imagine the negative impact on a high school student? Less is more in the early steps of learning. Later the students can expand their knowledge if not crushed in the first contact with it.If this simple approach was good enough to help Choate students get into Harvard, it should be good for the rest of us! Enjoy. It's fun to test oneself on these words, no matter your purpose for doing so. This is a perfect listen on the way to school, work, or the test itself!
