Summary

Gray’s life changes forever when she meets a boy as wild as an untamed stallion When Chav walks into Gray’s class at school for the first time dressed all in black, with wild hair and fierce eyes, Gray knows that her life is about to change. What she doesn’t yet know is that her mysterious new classmate is as fascinated by her as she is by him. Gray and Chav are drawn to each other by their shared love of horses. But Chav’s home life is more complicated than Gray could ever have imagined. Chav is a Gypsy and doesn’t trust gadjo, or non-Gypsy people. He and his siblings have run away from a painful past and he will do anything to defend his family. But when his brother and sister suddenly get sick, Chav needs help—Gray’s help. And earning Chav’s trust turns out to be harder than breaking a wild horse.

The author of A Green and Ancient Light “leads us through his world with equal measure of heart-stopping adventure and awakened awareness” (The News-Gazette).

Cymbril feels like a bird in a cage. Her task is to sing, to draw crowds to the markets offered by Master Rombol, lord of the Thunder Rake, the only home Cymbril has known. The Rake is a city on wheels, a vast wagon that rolls over the land, its interior a labyrinth of stairways, corridors, chambers, and secret doors.

When Cymbril befriends a fellow slave, a boy named Loric, one of the mysterious Fey, she dreams of a life beyond the Rake, and the two begin to plan their escape. But dangers haunt the shadows—the ominous Eye women, the perilous Night Market, the terrors of the Groag Swamp, and something that stalks the night’s dark byways, hunting . . .

Survival will depend upon courage, loyalty, and perhaps upon a gift from Cymbril’s long-departed parents—the glowing and magical fragment of a star.

“Durbin has created a world that, though mainly confined to a single mobile city, comes alive with fantastic creatures and a varied cast of supporting characters.” —Booklist

“Evocative imagery, an enthralling world, and a fully realized storyline that does not depend on future installments make this a standout among recent pre-YA fantasies.” —The Bulletin

Find a new home, my dear!” urged Jenny Giraffe’s mother after the door to their truck popped open during a minor accident on the streets of the French Quarter in New Orleans. Lonely and scared, Jenny is befriended by Claude and Angelle, a couple of French heritage who agree to help Jenny keep from being discovered and returned to the zoo. They tell Jenny that by mixing in with the unusual street performers and costumed entertainers, Jenny can wander through the busy streets unnoticed, and follow her true calling-painting!
