Summary

The AMX 13 was originally designed in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. It represents French ambitions for national resurgence and withdrawal from wartime dependence on American military technology.Being a light tank it was an ambitious and far sighted departure from conventional tank design and it found a ready export market as well as being a critical part in the French Army arsenal. Its basic hull design lent itself to the development of a vast list of variants.French designers progressively modernized, and indeed reinvented, the AMX13 and enabled it to claim to be one of the most successful armored vehicle programs of the postwar period. It proved its worth in numerous small wars worldwide in the service of many countries. This, the first commercially published work on the AMX13 in English, examines in detail the technical industrial and tactical story of this remarkably successful armored fighting vehicle. The authoritative text is backed by an impressive selection of images

The American Kennel Club's Meet the Chihuahua, an official publication of the American Kennel Club (AKC) prepared in collaboration with the Chihuahua Club of America, serves as the go-to resource for new and experienced owners of the world's tiniest dog. With his saucy personality, childlike intelligence, and perfect diminutive stature, the Chihuahua is the favorite of millions of dog lovers in America and around the world. Meet the Chihuahua begins with a discussion about who makes the right owner for such a tiny wonder as the Chihuahuas, and the parent-like responsibilities that accompany owning this long-lived canine tot. Equally important is the selection of the right breeder, a topic covered in a chapter on puppy selection that includes a list of questions to ask the breeder and the answers new owners are looking for. The book addresses the health of the Chi and alerts new owners to potential problems in the breed. The chapter on health discusses the importance of finding the right veterinarian for this breed as well as how to embark on a preventive-healthcare regimen with your vet. New owners will profit from the chapters dedicated to selecting the right merchandise for a new puppy and how to make the home and yard safe for the inquisitive Chi puppy. House-training and obedience training are presented in individual chapters, topics that all Chi owners need to consider seriously. The AKC's stance on positive training methods shines through as owners are enlightened to the power of praise and rewards. Additionally, Meet the Chihuahua offers info about grooming both coat varieties, exercise, dental health, and feeding.

The final chapter presents a fun-filled chapter on participating in dog sports—from participating in AKC performance events like dog shows, obedience and agility trials to becoming certified as a therapy dog and visiting nursing homes and retirement homes with your ready-to-love Chihuahua. The chapters also offer advice on how to pursue the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy and the Canine Good Citizen programs, both ideal for young dogs getting their start in organized dog events and therapy work. The Resources section of the book includes excellent recommendations for websites, periodicals, books, and programs that owners will find informative and helpful.

“A book about wool and sheep, the making of Scotland, England and farming, textile manufacture, folklore and, crucially, the essential craft of knitting.” —Janice Galloway, author of Jellyfish   Over the course of a year, Esther Rutter—who grew up on a sheep farm in Suffolk, and learned to spin, weave and knit as a child—travels the length of the British Isles, to tell the story of wool’s long history here.   She unearths fascinating histories of communities whose lives were shaped by wool, from the mill workers of the Border countries, to the English market towns built on profits of the wool trade, and the Highland communities cleared for sheep farming; and finds tradition and innovation intermingling in today’s knitwear industries. Along the way, she explores wool’s rich culture by knitting and crafting culturally significant garments from our history—among them gloves, a scarf, a baby blanket, socks and a fisherman’s jumper—reminding us of the value of craft and our intimate relationship with wool. This Golden Fleece is at once a meditation on the craft and history of knitting, and a fascinating exploration of wool’s influence on our landscape, history and culture.  “Wondrous.” —BBC Countryfile  “A yarn well told.” —The Irish Times  “A compelling literary journey through the social history of wool in the British Isles.” —Karen Lloyd, author of The Gathering Tide  “[Rutter’s] stops on her journey around Britain also knit together the past and the present, the social, historical and the personal, in an altogether engaging way.” —Books from Scotland
