The Short Stories Of EW Hornung. The short story is often viewed as an inferior relation to the Novel but it is an art in itself. To take a story and distil its essence into fewer pages while keeping character and plot rounded and driven is not an easy task. Many try and many fail. EW Hornung was one to succeed as this audiobook ably demonstrates. Ernest William Hornung was born in Middlesbrough England on 7th June 1866, the third son and youngest of eight children. Although spending most of his life in England and France he spent two years in Australia from 1884 and that experience was to colour and influence much of his written works. His most famous character A. J. Raffles, ‘the gentleman thief’, was published first in Cassell's Magazine during 1898 and was to make him famous across the world as the new century dawned. It is the cunning exploits of this intrepid character that this volume is based wonderfully brought to life by narrator, Richard Mitchley.

"Hand over your loot! Either give it to me now or I will take it from your body!" Terrence the Terror said. "I said give it back, Terry!" said Sir Justin. "Tom your friend is a nut!" Mary said. "What did he do murder the driver so he could drive the coach?" asked Sir Thomas. "I bailed up the Terror and took your sister's stuff back as she was under my care!" said Sir Justin. "New to this are you lad!" said one of them. "Terry I think you killed him!" said one of the others he was the black-clad highwayman named the Ghost for his sudden appearances and disappearances. "I just found her here, I was on my way to see you." "I have never seen anything so beautiful! I could forget everything and live in this moment forever"
“Justin, what was that about? What light on yonder window breaks-! Your eyes are like 2 twinkling silver stars!” shouted the Ghost.
“She's a friend of mine! You know she hates me as much as I hate her! If I said Isabella give me your money I would be giving myself away and what about you the French Ghost”
“I forgot who I was I knew the man with her, he's my friend Stephen Grimshaw. He's a minor poet and he's in love with the girl. He's been sending her love letter from what I've found out from being his go-between he uses the nom de plume of Silver Starr. She's fallen in love with her admirer now if I'm not mistaken she thinks you are him! This won't make Grimshaw happy at all!” the Ghost said.
“He's not happy! How do you think I am I'm engaged to two women already why no go for the trifecta and have more people wanting to see me dancing on the stage at Tyburn!”

Joseph Conrad – An Introduction. Born in 1857 in Poland, Joseph Conrad became a British citizen just before he turned 30. In the intervening years he lost both parents; becoming an orphan at 11 being thereafter raised by an uncle, who at 16 let the boy go to Marseille where he began to work on merchant ships though at times it included stints gun running and the intrigue of political conspiracy. At age 36 his life turned from one of ships to one of literary pursuit. Conrad brought to English Literature both a further layer of style and a deeper examination of the human psyche in a wealth of work. He wrote many novels, rightly regarded today, as some of the finest in English literature. Among their canon are Lord Jim, Nostromo, The Shadow Line and of course Heart Of Darkness. For this volume we dwell among his numerous short stories and the heart of Joseph Conrad. These stories are read for you by Richard Mitchley.
