What prompts people to engage in behaviors that have the opposite outcome from what they wished to have happened? What attracts us to our mates and then alienates us from them—only to find similar difficulties in subsequent relationships? How and why do we get in our own way of success? Richard Dawkins’ 1976 investigation into the science of evolution has become an enormous success, selling over a million copies in 25 languages.

Drawing on the work of renowned evolutionary scientists, Dawkins makes his argument about evolution by focusing on the gene itself. While others considered evolution to occur at the level of the individual or the group, here Dawkins sees the process of natural selection differently.

For him, the individual is nothing more than a vessel for a gene—a selfish gene—whose only impulse is to guarantee it survives into the future, even if that means the death of the individual.

Complex, controversial and very readable, The Selfish Gene invented a whole new language for the discussion of science. Taking complicated scientific analysis out of the laboratory and direct to the general reading public, the book not only opened eyes to new ways of seeing, but also successfully introduced the author who would go on to create a sensation with 2006’s best-selling The God Delusion.

“A superb novel.” -Feathered Quill Book Review (Reviewer’s Choice Award, gold winner; Adult Fiction/Animals, silver winner)“Told in a lyrical voice, Seyler’s deeply moving novel depicts the intricacies of family ties, relationships, and human connection.” -BookView Review “Its first-person usage creates a surreal atmosphere from the start, drawing readers into the world and perceptions of Beatrice and opening with birth.” -Diane Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review“An accomplished debut.” -BookLife ReviewTangled influences compel a young girl to hide her true nature until one weekend in her mid-20s when the truths she’s been suppressing call her to a crossroads she can’t avoid. Insulated from societal mores by her glamorous mother and humble father, six-year-old Beatrice—barefoot in ratty overalls—tunes into animals, senses the unspoken, and thrives. But when tragedy penetrates their rural Vermont bubble, Beatrice is thrust into a world that tells her she has no place unless she hides her depth, pretties up, and falls in line. She complies. Years later in San Francisco, incongruities in Beatrice's life abound. What’s real is hidden. What’s false is celebrated. She numbs and sidesteps and, despite inner warnings, artfully outruns thoughts of her family, the girl she once was, and the woman she pretends to be. But when a cascade of events steers her back to her childhood home, a discovery in a rundown barn quiets her. In the still point, she sees her crossroads: carry on the known path or step into uncertainty. Her future rests on her interpretation of change. Anxiety and loss. Or hope and renewal. She must decide who she is. In beautiful, spare prose, The Wisdom of Winter explores the tenacity of misbeliefs, the magic in forgiveness, and the artistry of the natural world in healing the past.

Back in the day before automobiles, a good horse trainer and veterinarian was the equivalent of “Mr Goodwrench”. A badly behaving or unhealthy equine was equivalent to breaking down on the highway or running out of gas on a lonely stretch of highway somewhere in Utah. My sources tell me that most of the training methods are ok, but stay away from the medical tips unless you are prepared to become the poster boy or girl for the local SPCA. Listen with tongue in cheek, and check with a professional before attempting any of these techniques on a real animal.Mike Vendetti, narrator

This illustrated history chronicles the first British bombing raid of WWII and the early lessons learned about strategic bombing. On the 4th of September 1939, Squadron Leader Paul Harris led 149 Squadron to Brunsbüttel, Wilhelmshaven in a Vickers Wellington Mk. 1 medium bomber. On the way he ordered that the guns of his airplane be tested, only to make the horrifying discovery that not one of them worked. Though he was flying completely defenseless, he chose to press on. On the 18th of December, Harris flew to Wilhelmshaven once again and took part in the Battle of Heligoland Bight, the first major encounter between the Royal Air Force and the Luftwaffe. This time he flew a Wellington Mk.1A—codenamed “R” for Robert—and his guns were red hot and ready. Of all the Wellington bombers that fought the Luftwaffe, Paul Harris’ old Wimpy is the only one left, preserved at the Brooklands Museum in Weybridge, England.
