Summary

It has been six months since Tess Müller stopped speaking. Her silence is baffling to her parents, her teachers, and her younger sister Meg, but the more urgent mystery for both girls is where their mother Evangeline goes each day, pushing an empty pram and returning home wet, muddy and dishevelled.

Their father Stefan, struggling with his own losses, tends to his apiary and tries to understand why his bees are disappearing. But after he discovers a car wreck and human remains on their farm, old secrets emerge to threaten the fragile family.

One day Tess's teacher Jim encounters Evangeline in the nearby mountains. Jim is in flight from the city and a past he is trying to forget, and Evangeline, raised in a mountain commune and bearing the scars of the fire that destroyed it, is a puzzle he longs to solve.

As the forest trees are felled and the lakes fill with run-off from the expanding mines, Tess watches the landscape of her family undergo shifts of its own. A storm is coming and the Müllers are in its path.

Welcome to Nocturne Falls, the town that celebrates Halloween 365 days a year.

The tourists think it's all a show: the vampires, the werewolves, the witches, the occasional gargoyle flying through the sky. But the supernaturals populating the town know better.
Living in Nocturne Falls means being yourself. Fangs, fur, and all.
For romance writer Roxy St. James, living in Nocturne Falls also means a fresh start. And as soon as her unbearable ex signs the divorce papers, that new beginning will be a reality. Unfortunately, her ex doesn’t seem ready to let her go and the subtle threats he’s been making leave her no choice but to confide in her oh-so-handsome neighbor, who just happens to be a deputy with the sheriff’s department.
But Officer Alex Cruz isn’t just the law. He’s also a panther shifter, a secret he’s sworn to keep (along with the truth about Nocturne Falls) from the very foxy Roxy. Humans aren’t supposed to know the town is filled with supernaturals. Then she starts seeing things she shouldn’t and thinks she’s losing her mind. His attraction—and concern—for her wars with the promise he’s made.
Will his truth be more than she can handle? Or will it cause her to write him out of her life?

Lena and Anna are best friends. Two young teenage girls who have grown up in the backwoods town of Tangent Springs; isolated from the modern world by old men and old ways. The girls spend their spare moments daydreaming of running away and meeting real men who will take them away from their nightmare world and treat them with love and respect as equals. Their daydreaming is the only escape from the intergenerational abuse that manifests in their hometown; like a genetic disorder being passed down from one generation to the next, as a deformity brought about by the mutating effects of inbreeding.

Escape is their dream but to do so may mean giving up their lives completely. For one the cost is her life. For the others; it appears that the price may be even greater.

Filled with human monsters that are created and nurtured from warped belief systems built on lies, secrets and control, a turbulent chain of events that the three-young main character’s must endure for there to be any survivors. The ones that walk away may survive; but at what cost. A twisted look at the extremes of patriarchal families and cultures that is of course fictitious; or is it? That is The Lesser Evil.

“The difference between the Parthenon and the World Trade Center, between a French wine glass and a German beer mug, between Bach and John Philip Sousa, between Sophocles and Shakespeare, between a bicycle and a horse, though explicable by historical moment, necessity, and destiny, is before all else a difference of imagination. The imagination is like the drunk man who has lost his watch, and must get drunk again to find it. It is as intimate as speech and custom, and to trace its ways we need to re-educate our eyes.”—Guy DavenportModernism spawned the greatest explosion of art, architecture, literature, painting, music, and dance of any era since the Renaissance. In its long unfolding, from Yeats, Pound and Eliot to Picasso and Matisse, from Diaghilev and Balanchine to Cunningham and Stravinsky and Cage, the work of Modernism has provided the cultural vocabulary of our time. One of the last pure Modernists, Guy Davenport was perhaps the finest stylist and most protean craftsman of his generation. Publishing more than two dozen books of fiction, essays, poetry and translations over a career of more than forty years, he was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 1990. In poetry and prose, Davenport drew upon the most archaic and the most modern of influences to create what he called “assemblages”—lush experiments that often defy classification. Woven throughout is a radical and coherent philosophy of desire, design and human happiness. But never before has Davenport’s fiction, nonfiction, poetry and translations been collected together in one compendium. Eight years after his death, The Guy Davenport Reader offers the first true introduction to the far-ranging work of this neglected genius.

    An Heiress in Distress
Breanna Dawson hears wedding bells in her future. The curvy heiress is engaged to Silicon Valley billionaire William Keys, and her parents are certain the marriage of convenience is the answer to her family’s humiliating money problems. Breanna would do almost anything to win her parents’ approval, but the thought of spending the rest of her life with a cold, cruel man is too much to bear — even for a dutiful daughter like her. The closer she gets to saying “I do,” the more suffocated she feels. In a moment of white-hot panic, her survival instinct flares, and she flees.

But her escape goes awry when she crashes her stolen car in the middle of a raging blizzard and wakes up half-dressed in a handsome stranger’s bed. Trapped in the wilderness with no way to get home, Breanna should be afraid. So why is she so aroused by the tall, mysterious man who rescued her? A single look from his emerald green eyes makes her body hum with need. His sexy smile, his possessive touch, and his deep, rumbling voice flood her mind with fantasies and leave her aching to submit to his every desire.
A Bear Shifter Meets His Mate
Bear shifter Rafe Cabello just wants to be left alone. Balancing the needs of his inner bear with running a multi-million dollar company is hard enough without the distraction of a relationship. But when a voluptuous woman wrecks her car right in front of him, he can’t turn away. He pulls the unconscious woman from the crash and carries her back to his cabin to patch her up. He has every intention of getting rid of her as soon as possible. But his bear has other ideas.

Every glimpse of her pouty lips makes him salivate with want. Every swish of her ample hips, every flutter of her lashes, every graze of her skin against his sets his body on fire. Rafe knows that if he acts on his growing attraction to Breanna, there’s no going back. His bear insists she’s their fated mate, and with every day that passes, it gets harder and harder to deny his animal’s fierce desire.
    A Secret Revealed
But before Rafe can give into the passion flaring between them, he has to reveal his secret. And that secret may just send his sweet, curvy mate running as fast as she can all the way back to civilization…
