Summary

Traditionally, the martial arts community believed that engaging in weight training was detrimental to the performance of the art, that it would hinder one's flexibility, speed, and agility. To be effective fighters, martial artists had to be quick and light on their feet like Bruce Lee and other slim and small, but powerful fighters. They maintained that karate was all about good techniques and proper timing and that muscle size has little to do with it. After all, the art of self-defense lies in the premise that smaller, weaker people can defend themselves effectively against larger, stronger opponents. While it's true that good technique and proper timing are essential, there's no reason to believe that muscular fitness will hinder a martial artist's effectiveness. In fact, just the opposite is true: with increased strength comes the enhanced ability to defend oneself. A well-designed weight-training routine--in addition to regular martial arts practice--will make practitioners stronger, not slower. In some cases, it can even improve their speed. Fortunately, the attitude toward weight training in the martial arts community has changed--largely due to an abundance of scientific data showing the positive effects of weight training for all kinds of sports. Today's athletes have much to gain by using weights to improve their performance. For martial artists, these gains include increased strength, increased resistance to fatigue, and even decreased risk of injury. In this book, veteran martial artist and fitness expert Mikhail Krupnik shows readers how to design a weight-training program to fit their individual needs and goals. From all-important safety issues, determining one's levelof fitness, and setting goals, to specific exercises, sample routines, and even proper nutrition--he covers everything martial artists need to know to enhance their performance with weight training.

When billions poured into the neglected east London borough hosting the 2012 Olympics, a turf war broke out between crime families for control of a now valuable strip of land.

Using violence, guile and corruption, one gangster, the Long Fella, emerged as a true untouchable. A team of local detectives made it their business to take him on until Scotland Yard threw them under the bus and the business of putting on 'the greatest show on earth' won the day.

Award-winning journalist Michael Gillard took up where they left off to expose the tangled web of chief executives, big banks, politicians and dirty money where innocent lives are destroyed and the guilty flourish. Gillard's efforts culminated in a landmark court case, which finally put a spotlight on the Long Fella and his friends and exposed London's real Olympic legacy.

Kim Sturgess was a weekend sailor: he enjoyed club racing and several brief sailing holidays, but had never attempted a substantial expedition. Reaching the age of fifty focused the mind and he decided to sail around Britain. While many cruising sailors would not contemplate a 1900 nautical mile voyage, he broke the voyage into a series of day sails, making it an achievable ambition for him, largely single-handed, and for many other weekend sailors who might dream of sailing around their home island. This book tells the quirky traveller’s narrative of the voyage and visits to forty-eight towns. Evoking the spirit of both Jerome K. Jerome with his Three Men in a Boat and Joshua Slocum’s Sailing Alone Around the World, Kim shares his thoughts and struggles, recounting how easy it is for anyone to become an adventurer here at home. But don’t expect to always agree with him – he has been described as “the Jeremy Clarkson of yachting”!

This is one of the very few movement education programs designed for toddlers (18-36 months). It includes activities that exercise the whole body and encourage children to enjoy physical activity and fitness. It can instill lifelong healthy habits—something that is especially important when obesity rates are at an all-time high. A bound-in CD includes 23 original songs that add joy and energy to 14 lesson plans. Each lesson plan contains four activities, plus extension ideas. This book was first published by Human Kinetics, followed by Delmar Cengage Learning in 2000 (ISBN 978-0-7668-1602-2), as part of the Moving and Learning series. The other books in the series are also updated by Redleaf Press: Preschoolers and Kindergarteners Moving and Learning (ISBN 978-1-60554-268-3) and Early Elementary Children Moving and Learning (ISBN 978-1-60554-269-0). Updates reflect early learning standards, working with children with special needs, and the book will be sold at a lower, more attractive price for teachers and caregivers. Author Rae Pica, an internationally recognized leader in the early childhood education field, is a proponent for physical education for young children. She served on the National Association for Sport and Physical Education's task force that created national guidelines for early childhood physical activity.
