Summary

Ultimately responsible for the creative content on screen, directors are the captains of the ship on every film. All actors and heads of department report to them. Some directors are also writers, employing unique styles of dialogue and characterizations. Others, like Pedro Almodóvar, create inimitable visual and tonal styles that set their films apart from the crowd. Unlike the other volumes in the FilmCraft series, Directing covers all the disciplines of film art that pass through the director’s hands, from development and writing, to working with actors, designers and cinematographers, to post-production and distribution.

Anyone fortunate enough to have actually held a medieval manuscript in his hands must have felt excited at this immediate contact with the past. Both famous and unknown authors wrote philosophical, natural scientific and theological treatises, romances about knights and courtly love; humanists and theologists translated and commented upon the classical literature of antiquity; travellers wrote descriptions of their incredible journeys; and ascetic chroniclers recorded and kept alive the historic events of their times for future generations.

There were several newspaper-based dramas during radio’s golden age including The Big Story, Casey, Crime Photographer, Box 13, and Let George Do It but Night Beat was a cut above the others. It followed Randy Stone, hard-nosed Chicago Star newsman and his quest for the human-interest story behind the headlines. Hollywood actor Frank Lovejoy voiced the role of Randy Stone, who came to vivid life thanks to expert scripts by Russell Hughes, E. Jack Neumann, John Michael Hayes (who would later write the Hitchcock film classics To Catch a Thief and Rear Window), and Larry Marcus. Lovejoy's distinctive voice and approach to the role, combined with top performances by veteran radio actors gave Night Beat a radio noir style that listeners loved. The stories ran the gamut from lighthearted to tragic and through it all, Randy Stone, in a hard-boiled yet sensitive portrayal by Frank Lovejoy, would narrate the stories and comment on them from beginning to end—often with a hard-edged cynicism. Night Beat aired on NBC radio from 1950 to 1952 and, for a time, was sponsored by Wheaties. Enjoy 12 half-hour episodes of one of the best dramas ever to be heard on radio.
