Summary

Winner of the 2018 Miles Franklin Literary Award
Shortlisted for the 2018 Stella Prize
“For a novel concerned with dislocation, there's a lot of grounding humor in The Life to Come. Most of it comes at the expense of Pippa and her ilk, but de Kretser's observations are so spot on, you'll forgive her even as you cringe.” —New York Times Book Review

“The acclaimed Australian writer’s fifth novel spans continents—set in Australia, France and her native Sri Lanka—and weaves together disparate narratives that raise uncomfortable questions about Australian society, self-satisfied liberalism and modern life.” —Huffington Post, "60 Books We Can't Wait to Read in 2018”

Set in Australia, France, and Sri Lanka, Miles Franklin Award-shortlisted The Life to Come is about the stories we tell and don’t tell ourselves as individuals, as societies, and as nations. Driven by a vivid cast of characters, it explores necessary emigration, the art of fiction, and ethnic and class conflict.

Pippa is an Australian writer who longs for the success of her novelist teacher and eventually comes to fear that she “missed everything important.” In Paris, Celeste tries to convince herself that her feelings for her married lover are reciprocated. Ash makes strategic use of his childhood in Sri Lanka, but blots out the memory of a tragedy from that time and can’t commit to his trusting girlfriend, Cassie. Sri Lankan Christabel, who is generously offered a passage to Sydney by Bunty, an old acquaintance, endures her dull job and envisions a brighter future that “rose, glittered, and sank back,” while she neglects the love close at hand.

The stand-alone yet connected worlds of The Life to Come offer meditations on intimacy, loneliness, and our flawed perception of reality. Enormously moving, gorgeously observant of physical detail, and often very funny, this new novel by Michelle de Kretser reveals how the shadows cast by both the past and the future can transform and distort the present. It is teeming with life and earned wisdom—exhilaratingly contemporary, with the feel of a classic.

They find more than a bargain…
Black Friday should be all about shopping and discounts, but when Sean and Sara only have a few more items left to buy, screams fill the mall—and for good reason. A man has fallen to his death from the second level.

But what exactly happened isn’t that straightforward, and normally, Sean and Sara would leave this matter to the police, but the widow was a childhood friend of Sara’s. While the police are leaning toward the belief the man intentionally took the leap, the widow is adamant her husband would never jump and asks Sara for her help.

Despite the fact there is an unresolved past between the friends—in which Sara feels she let her down—Sara can’t turn her back on her now. Fueled by guilt and the need to find answers, Sara convinces Sean they should look into the man’s death.

But the answers aren’t all coming quickly. Mall security has dropped the ball and there’s no seeming motive for murder. To find out the truth will take unconventional means, a little undercover work, and the help of their friend Jimmy. And if it all comes together, they just might have this case wrapped up in time for the holidays. Maybe even with a pretty little bow.

No Questions Asked picks up where 'Storms' left off in the back garden of Jeff Barton's house where he's hosting a barbecue for neighbours, family and friends. But the party is abruptly ended when the body of an eleven year-old child, the son of one of Jeff's neighbours, is found in the woods nearby. As the covers are lifted on the secrets held by those living around him he wonders if a child killer could be actually living on his street. Whilst he tries to take his relationship with his deputy, DI Rebecca Stockton, to a deeper level the investigation brings him back into confrontation with his old nemesis Bernie Connelly who is one of Manchester's most notorious gangsters and has a personal interest in finding the child killer, leading him to pick off a list of paedophiles who are the prime suspects. Added to everything else is a case of political corruption that may or may not be linked to the murders and this proves to be one of Jeff Barton's most complicated and yet most urgent of cases to solve.
