Summary

Michel de Montaigne was one of the most influential figures of the Renaissance, singlehandedly responsible for popularising the essay as a literary form.

In 1572, Montaigne retired to his estates in order to devote himself to leisure, reading and reflection. There he wrote his constantly expanding 'essays', inspired by the ideas he found in books from his library and his own experience.

He discusses subjects as diverse as war-horses and cannibals, poetry and politics, sex and religion, love and friendship, ecstasy and experience. Above all, Montaigne studied himself to find his own inner nature and that of humanity. The Essays are among the most idiosyncratic and personal works in all literature. An insight into a wise Renaissance mind, they continue to engage, enlighten and entertain modern readers.

Born in 1533, Michel de Montaigne studied law and spent a number of years working as a counsellor before devoting his life to reading, writing and reflection. He died in 1586.

Since the early Egyptians human beings have formalized the business of learning, setting up a designated environment of some form to pass knowledge and learning on to groups of students. In this second edition of his Very Short Introduction, Gary Thomas explores how and why education has evolved as it has, examining the ways in which it has responded over the centuries to various influences in politics, philosophy, and the social sciences. Focusing on education today, he considers especially the controversies over progressive versus formal teaching, and also examines education worldwide, assessing the accelerating trend on both sides of the Atlantic of the move to charter, academy, and "free" schools. The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically accelerated moves to online learning in schools and universities, and in this new edition Thomas looks again at curriculums and what shape they should take in a rapidly changing world. He asks why action on race, gender and social inequality has borne so little fruit thus far, questioning the oft-made claim of education to be a force for social mobility, and offering an analysis on how education may develop over the coming century.

"We are going back to basics, bypassing as best we can the contemporary flood of therapeutic theories and techniques. Psychotherapy rests upon neither a couch, nor an armchair, nor a stack of texts—but on a simple three-legged stool.
First the skills that come from practical engagement with the psyche. Second, the art of soul-making and its parallel with other arts. Third, a supportive philosophy."
This in depth, weekend program recorded with James Hillman in rare form, captures the depth, soul and clarity of the brilliant psychotheorist.
This program is a must for the person that is into Jungian Psychology. It is also a rare opportunity to discover and introduce yourself to the timeless wisdom of one of the great thinkers in the modern times. Oh, and there is a lot of laughter along with the learning. Enjoy!

Warning: This is a summary for two books. It is intended to harmonize with, not to replace, Barack Obama’s compelling story, A Promised Land, and Michelle Obama’s epic story, Becoming.
A riveting, deeply personal account of history in the making, A Promised Land relates the story of Obama’s unlikely journey starting as a young boy in Indonesia and Hawaii. His time in prep school showed more passion for his jump-shot and partying than studying. We experience his college years under the admitted influence of Marxism, and into Harvard Law and as the President of the Law Review-- which would launch his political career with substantial hype in The New York Times. Obama offers insights into the dynamics of U.S. partisan politics and international diplomacy up until the time he allegedly captures Osama bin Laden.

In a life filled with racial tension, and a haunting self-doubt of her abilities, Michelle Obama emerged as one of the most iconic women in recent history. Establishing herself as a powerful advocate for the female sex and improved nutrition and exercise. Michelle invites readers to join her in chronicling her story. We experience her childhood on the South Side of Chicago, a shy girl self-confined to her room after school to play with dolls until age 10, to her years as an executive balancing the demands of work and being a mother, to her time spent in the 132-room White House where she broke security protocol to sneak out to see the rainbow White House colors to celebrate gay marriage in all 50 states. She describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both private and public--like inappropriately placing her hand on the Queen of England. or saying that she was proud of America--for the first time. Becoming is the personal story of an unlikely rise to the White House by a woman of color that also sends up a few puzzling red flags and glosses over or omits a few key facts.

This book focuses on the emotional and inspirational support gifted children need to accomplish the goals they or you have set. It’s not necessarily easy to be gifted, with all the high expectations and a brain that races at night when you are trying to sleep and are actually coming up with a million ideas to implement.
Gifted children often have a hard time staying focused on one thing, unless it’s something they are passionate about. Then they are hyper-focused. This and other problems can be address when talking to teachers, as well as the fact that some gifted kids seem to underachieve for various reasons. The best ways to motivate your gifted children are here, as well as tactics to deal with bullies, which often target more sensitive and intelligent children.
Bullying is one of the last topics addressed in this guide: How to talk about it with the teacher, how to avoid becoming a target more quickly, and how to make it go away.
If any of these things interest you, then I encourage you to get started right away.
