Harness the power of whole-plant foods to lead a long and vibrant life—whether you’re vegan, vegetarian or omnivorous.Eat more whole plants. This simple recommendation is at the heart of a building consensus: The healthiest diet is a plant-based diet. Plants have spent millions of years evolving their defenses against disease. Now, studies indicate that by eating whole, minimally processed plant foods, humans too can gain protection—against everyday illness, diabetes, obesity, depression, mental decline, heart disease, and even cancer. In The Plant-Powered Diet, registered dietitian Sharon Palmer marshals the most up-to-date findings in nutrition to explain both why you should fill more of your plate with whole-plant foods and how to do so, whether you’re a longtime vegan or a committed omnivore. Here is:• Essential information on the healthiest plant foods—whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, and even herbs, spices, chocolate, coffee, tea, and wine• Advice for navigating the supermarket, kitchen, restaurant menus, on-the-go meals, exercise, and more• A 14-day meal plan, plus daily action alerts to get you started• And 75 original plant-based recipes for every meal—all with complete nutritional data. The Plant-Powered Diet is not a diet you’ll go “on” today and “off” tomorrow. It is a simple, satisfying, and thoroughly delicious way of eating that can not only last your lifetime—but lengthen it.

This nineteenth-century cooking manual was America’s first baking cookbook and the first to organize recipes by listing ingredients first.

Eliza Leslie’s Seventy-five Receipts for Pastry, Cakes, and Sweetmeats was the first distinctively baking cookbook published in America, as well as the first to share ingredients in a systematic list order at the beginning of each recipe. As Eliza recorded at the time of initial publication, “All the ingredients, with their proper quantities, are enumerated in a list at the head of each receipt, a plan which will greatly facilitate the business of procuring and preparing the requisite article.” Not only was this collection of recipes and tips Leslie’s first cookbook, it was her most popular and influential cookery title. Featuring recipes ranging from Preserved Pine-Apple to Gooseberry Jelly, Curds and Whey, and Butter Biscuits, Eliza stressed that the recipes within the collection are “in every sense of the word, American,” as opposed to the many British and French cookbooks being produced at the time. She adds that if exactly followed, the articles produced from this book “will not be found inferior to any of a similar description made in the European manner.”

This facsimile edition of Eliza Leslie’s Seventy-five Receipts for Pastry, Cakes, and Sweetmeats was reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts, founded in 1812

“A volume that demystifies these vegetables and presents a hundred or so recipes that are simple and, for the most part, economic to prepare.” —Mostly Food & Travel Journal   Everyone knows and loves the traditional pumpkin—plump and golden carved into a Halloween lantern—and perhaps you’ve prepared a pumpkin pie or a thick pumpkin soup. But in the last few years other more interesting and varied varieties such as patty pans, kabocha, butternut, acorn, and spaghetti squashes have become available from farmer’s markets and allotment gardeners.   For all those cooks who have wondered what to do with these glorious new vegetables, or those who simply want some inspirational ideas for the good old pumpkin or what to do with that glut of zucchini—here are the recipes. From Pumpkin and White Bean Soup to Minted Zucchini Soup; from Squash Couscous to Zucchini Bread; from Spicy Pumpkin, Rum, and Raisin Ice Cream to Pumpkin Wine, there are over one hundred easy-to-prepare dishes such as stews, pasta sauces, pickles, relishes, cakes, breads, quiches, biscuits, and jams, to take you through the entire year.   For those enthusiasts who like to grow their own produce there are cultivation instructions and seed sources as well as advice on picking, storing, and a guide to varieties.   “This book offers countless recipes for all varieties of squash. There are sweet and savoury recipes alike, including a few surprises.” —Mutherfudger

"Wine is, above all, about pleasure. Those who make it ponderous make it dull . . . If you keep an open mind and take each wine on its own terms, there is a world of magic to discover." So wrote the renowned wine expert Kermit Lynch in the introduction to Adventures on the Wine Route, his ultimate tour of France, especially its wine cellars. The "magic" of wine is Lynch's subject as he takes the listener on a singular journey through the Loire, Bordeaux, the Languedoc, Provence, northern and southern Rhone, and Burgundy. In Adventures on the Wine Route, the wine lover will find wisdom without a trace of pretension and hype. As Victor Hazan wrote, "In Kermit Lynch's small, true, delightful book there is more understanding about what wine really is than in everything else I have read."Praise for Lynch and for Adventures on the Wine Route has not ceased since the book's initial publication a quarter century ago. In 2007, the New York Times called it "one of the finest American books on wine." And in June 2012, the Wall Street Journal proclaimed it "the best book on the wine business." Full of vivid portraits of French vintners, memorable evocations of the French countryside, and, of course, vibrant descriptions of French wines, this new edition of Adventures on the Wine Route updates a modern classic for our times.
