Summary

Get the Summary of Nassim Nicholas Taleb's Fooled By Randomness in 20 minutes. Please note: This is a summary & not the original book. Original book introduction: Randomness is everywhere and involved in almost everything, especially politics and the economy. Presidents foolishly boast about all the jobs that "he created", when it was only the chance of the market. Our belief that we owe our success to our own abilities, instead of recognizing most of our success comes from chance, is just another primitive superstition from our ancient past, the author argues. The human mind all too often sees elephants in the clouds, when it's really just water vapors that happen to have randomly assumed shapes we associate with elephants for a brief period of time.

The author is particularly critical of the literary mind, which is trained to see meaning where there is only noise. The literary mind is so obsessed with meaning that it extracts all sorts of meanings from obscure passages and insignificant events that have nothing to do with those meanings at all. They see the intent of an author where it was clearly only random, such as a minute word choice or the placement of a certain imagery.

Making predictions about the future is always tricky. But there is one prediction that author Rob Bernshteyn is quite confident in making: Across a host of industries, we will move to a model that he calls value as a service. It is already common knowledge that many traditional-products companies are converting the delivery of their offerings to the as-a-service model. With the completion of this transition assumed, the coming disruption will focus less on the delivery model and more on the value delivered.Value as a Service is the simple idea that measurable value delivered for customers will be the ultimate competitive battleground. Every customer will want to understand the exact value that they are being provided. They will want a quantifiable difference as they compare their options. Is your business ready to embrace this coming disruption? Are you ready?

When we think about what it takes to be a successful CIO, there are a lot of things that probably come to mind. Staying on top of changing technology, anticipating security issues, and preparing the IT department for the company's growth. However, it turns out that there is something that is far more important than any of these things to a CIO's success: the ability to clearly communicate.
What You'll Find Inside:CIOS SHOULD STOP SENDING EMAILS – NOW!CIO LESSONS FROM ZYNGA: DON’T MANAGE LIKE THEY DO!WHAT A CIO NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT CREATING A TWITTER STRATEGYHOW CIOS CAN MAKE SOCIAL MEDIA WORK FOR THEM, NOT AGAINST THEM
One of the first things that any CIO needs to understand is that email is not their friend. It is a powerful tool, but it can be overused. We need to look at different companies and see what they are doing correctly – and wrong. We are living in the age of social media and as the company's CIO you are going to have to find ways to make these tools work for you, not against you.
When it comes to social media, because there are now so many different tools, a CIO is going to have to take the time to create a plan for how to maximize the value of each tool. At the same time it is going to be the CIOs responsibility to make sure that each of the members of the IT department feel satisfied in their job. To make this happen, the CIO is going to have to become a good communicator in the office.
Communication can take on many different forms for a CIO. One of the more common forms is that of negotiation. No matter if it is with workers, other departments, or vendors this is a skill that every CIO needs to have. Another communication skill that a CIO has to have is the ability to give a speech to a room full of people. This can be tricky to do well, but as with all such things, it is something that can be learned with practice.
The job of CIO is something that is being done every day at just about every company. As CIO we need to understand that we can learn from the experiences that our peers have had and we can adopt some of their strategies inside of our companies. When we go to communicate with our teams and peers we'll have to keep in mind that the words that we choose to use will determine how much power and credibility we will be given.
The good news about communication for CIOs is that this is a skill that can be learned. If we're willing to take the time and commit ourselves to becoming better communicators, then we can become more successful CIOs.

From the bestselling author of The Radical Leap and Greater Than Yourself comes the first book to directly address love as a hard-core business principle that generates measurable results

It’s time to toss aside the touchy-feely notions of love in business and acknowledge the real power that it holds. Love is not only appropriate in the context of business, it’s the foundation of great leadership. To put it bluntly: love is just damn good business. That’s the simple but profound truth that leadership consultant Steve Farber has discovered in his extensive work with Fortune 100 companies and other successful businesses. His game-changing approach to love as a practical business strategy will help you to:

    * Identify your passions-and share them with others

    * Create a culture of love at work-and spark innovation, productivity, and joy

    * Serve your customers, so they love how you treat them-and have them coming back for more

    * Invest time in making personal connections-that are mutually rewarding

    * Focus on serving the needs of others-they’re going to love it

    * Do what you love-and make it your business, so others love it, too

The proven principles you’ll find in this book will help you lay the groundwork for a thriving, competitive enterprise. When love is part of your organization’s framework and operationalized in its culture, employees and customers feel genuinely valued. Employees who are passionate about the work that they do are more loyal, innovative, creative, and inspired, and that translates to great customer experience. They don’t serve others out of obligation, but because of a genuine desire to improve people’s lives. And when customers reciprocate by loving your products, your services, and your people, that’s when something great happens. That’s when you get loyalty. That’s when you get raving fans. It’s a refreshingly human way of doing business.

In addition to Farber’s field-tested strategies, you’ll find inspiring case studies from a wide range of industries and leaders, revealing self-assessment quizzes, and practical pointers on how to build a corporate culture based on love, the ultimate competitive advantage. At the end of the day, it’s just damn good business.
