Summary

One destiny, the remote Caribbean isles. One dream, freedom.
The sixteen-year-old Catalina Solis is bound to the Caribbean island of Margarita to live with her husband Domingo Rodríguez, when the ship is being attacked by English pirates. To save herself, she jumps off board wearing the clothes of her brother who had been travelling with her.
After two years on an isolated island, she's rescued by the merchant Esteban Nevares. To escape her mentally impaired husband, she strickes a deal with Nevares to be the son he never had, Martín Nevares. Together they embark on an extraordinary adventure on the Chacona (Nevares's ship) as traders in the ports of the Caribbean and as arms smugglers for the cimmarones (free slaves) living in Spanish Mainland. This was the name in Spain's colonial times given to Venezuela, the Isthmus of Panama and part of Colombia which was a province of New Granada.
Asensi's novel is very entertaining and gives us a view on a part of history that we rarely read about. It offers insight into the society of the Spanish colonies a century after Columbus discovered the New World. How people lived and struggled to survive in a rough environment. In those days, the commercial administration was established in Sevilla.

The award-winning author blends fact and fiction to bring the Mexican Revolution to life in a “harrowing and brutal tale” of its famous leader (Rocky Mountain News).   Waged from 1910 to 1920, the Mexican Revolution profoundly transformed Mexican government and culture. And Pancho Villa was its “incarnation and its eagle of a soul”—so says Rodolfo Fierro, the narrator of The Friends of Pancho Villa, an ex-con, train robber, and Villa’s loyal friend. Killers of men and lovers of life, the revolutionaries fought for freedom, for a new Mexico, and for Villa himself. In return, they shared victory and death with their country’s most powerful hero.   “Frankly describing the murder, betrayal and deceit that turned a revolution against dictatorship into a civil war,” the Los Angeles Times Book Prize–winning author of The Ways of Wolfe delivers a masterpiece of ferocious loyalty, bloody revolution, and legends that live forever (Publishers Weekly).   “One of the greatest chroniclers of the mythical American outlaw life” —Entertainment Weekly   “This is not for the faint of heart, but then, neither is revolution.” —Publishers Weekly

The second book in a trilogy of the Reconstruction era - The Leopard's Spots (1902), The Clansman (1905), and The Traitor (1907), this novel was the basis for the 1915 silent movie classic, "The Birth Of A Nation". Within a fictional story, it records Dixon's understanding of the origins of the first Ku Klux Klan (his uncle was a Grand Titan during Dixon's childhood), recounting why white southerners' began staging vigilante responses to the savage personal insults, political injustices and social cruelties heaped upon them during Reconstruction. Still considered dangerous "propaganda" encouraging segregation, white unity, and white supremacy, this incendiary novel nevertheless sheds light on the social conditions and the mindset of many Americans (North and South) during that period, and its influence on subsequent southern authors from Margaret Mitchell (Gone With The Wind) to Faulkner, Allen Tate, Robert Penn, and others, was significant.
