Sinopse

A chance encounter in an alpine landscape leads to a profound reflection on lost love and the elusive nature of happiness. This evocative story captures the sublime beauty of the mountains as a mirror for the protagonist’s internal longing. Shelley’s gift for atmospheric detail creates a dreamlike world where the line between reality and memory begins to blur.

This short story from the collection Wild Child was originally published in the New Yorker.
Thirteen-year-old Dill has a tendency to get in trouble, to act out, and perhaps it is due to his mother's latest boyfriend, Grady, leaving them behind. Meanwhile Sanjuro Ichyguro and his wife have moved from Japan to the United States and are having trouble adjusting. Between the cultural divide, the swelling emotions of their respective losses, and budding pyromania, Dill and Sanjuro are waging a silent war between their neighboring houses.

Mark Twain (Samuel L. Clemens) is called sometimes “the father of American literature”. He was a journalist, lecturer, boat pilot, inventor and, of course, writer. His wide life experience allowed him to depict different aspects of life very realistically. The most famous writings are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This book became a national treasure. But there are also many worthwhile tales by Twain. One of them is "My Watch". The plot is very witty and amusing - the hero speaks at length about his precious watch. It had been working for months without gaining or losing, but one day something went wrong and he had to bring it to the watchmaker. Then it happened many times. Eventually the hero killed the next watchmaker. Everything is described in such a funny way you can’t help laughing. This story makes you smile even when you read it for the tenth time. All the experiences of the poor guy with almost broken watch are depicted very expressively and caustically. The ending is tricky in its best Twain’s style. Spend some minutes to get to know with this fascinating tale and you won’t regret it.A SmartTouch Media production.

Dubliners - James Joyce's stories of his native homeland - performed by a cast of 15 different actors originating from Ireland.  Unabridged.
The fifteen stories that make up this brilliant audio roam over a human landscape that stretches from the bleakest of despair to the most blinding of epiphanies.  First published in 1914, the stories are as lucid and accessible as they are memorable poignant.
As you listen to the cast of internationally famous stage and screen actors perform Dubliners, both the spiritually deadening atmosphere that drove Joyce from his homeland and the irresistible emotional pull it always kept on him to the end of his days become heartbreakingly beautiful.

    Officer and Soldier-Servant -...

    Vsevolod Garshin

Vsevolod Mikhailovich Garshin was born on 14th February 1855 in what is now Dnipro in the Ukraine, but then part of the Russian Empire.
After attending secondary school he studied at the Saint Petersburg Mining Institute.
Wars between and on behalf of Empires were a regular feature of the decades then. Garshin volunteered to serve in the Russian army at the beginning of the Russo-Turkish War in 1877.
He began as a private in the Balkans campaign and was wounded in action. By the end of the war, in 1878, he had been promoted to officer rank.
By now Garshin, having previously published some articles and reviews in newspapers, wished to devote himself to a literary career. The decision made he resigned his army commission.
His time as a soldier provided rich experiences for his early stories. His first ‘Four Days’ was related as the interior monologue of a wounded soldier left for dead on the battlefield for four days, face to face with the corpse of a Turkish soldier he had killed, gained him early admiration as an author of note.
He wrote perhaps only 20 stories, but their influence was immense, although in these more modern times he is barely remembered and lives in the more prolific shadows of others. His characters are superbly worked into stories that come alive in the intensity and reality of his prose.
Garshin’s most well-known story is ‘The Red Flower’, also known as ‘Scarlet Blossom’ and is easily amongst the first rank of stories dealing with mental health issues.
Despite early literary success, he himself experienced periodical bouts of mental illness.
In one such bout Garshin attempted to commit suicide by throwing himself down the stone stairs leading into his apartment building. Although not immediately fatal, Vsevolod Garshin died as a result of his injuries in a St Petersburg hospital on 5th April 1888. He was 33.
