Summary

A simple algorithm for solving a set of nonlinear equations by matrix algebra has been discovered recently — first by transforming them into an equivalent matrix equation and then finding the solution analytically in terms of the inverse matrix of this equation. With this newly developed ACORN (Adaptive Constrained Optimal Robust Nonlinear) algorithm, it is possible to minimize the objective function [constructed from the functions in the nonlinear set of equations] without computing its derivatives. This book will present the details of ACORN algorithm and how it is used to solve large scale nonlinear equations with an innovative approach ACORN Magic [minimization algorithms gathered in a cloud].The ultimate motivation of this work is its application to optimization. In recent years, with the advances in big-data, optimization becomes an even more powerful tool in knowledge discovery. ACORN Magic is the perfect choice in this kind of application because of that fact that it is fast, robust and simple enough to be embedded in any type of machine learning program.

"I am often asked why I choose to work for orangutans. And my honest answer is, that in many ways, it was the orangutans who first chose me. As I’m sure you can imagine, my answer is often met with quizzical looks, raised eyebrows, and an even greater curiosity on the part of the questioner. But the truth is that I never consciously planned to do this work. Nor did I envision myself as becoming an author, a speaker or an outspoken campaigner on their behalf. And I certainly had no idea that I would one day found and lead an international conservation charity, The Orangutan Project, to ensure the welfare and survival of our remarkable orange cousins. However, from experience, I’ve come to see that life has a way of putting unexpected possibilities and significant choices across our paths, and the decision is always our individual responsibility as to how we will respond. So it was for me, that by the time we started The Orangutan Project back in 1998, it had become the single, most obvious course of action for me to take. In fact, to not start the organization and dedicate my life to this work was simply no-longer an option...."

The concept of Infinity has been around since the ancients and it has many practical applications in mathematics like Calculus.
Infinity is also important in Fractals which are a graphical algorithm which is used in many computer graphics applications today and which has infinite depth.
It is also applicable to our Universe since the standard concept we are taught about the Big Bang as the beginning of the Universe may be wrong.
Modern evidence is showing us contradictions which say that we live in a Universe which is steady state and might even be infinite in size. The Universe doesn’t have a creation date we can be sure of.
We don’t really know if it is infinite in size but the Universe is certainly much larger and older than our best scientific instruments can measure.
This book is an exploration of Infinity and new understandings of our Universe which have come to light in recent decades.

In 1962, Maurice Wilkins, Francis Crick, and James Watson received the Nobel Prize, but it was Rosalind Franklin's data and photographs of DNA that led to their discovery.Brenda Maddox tells a powerful story of a remarkably single-minded, forthright, and tempestuous young woman who, at the age of fifteen, decided she was going to be a scientist, but who was airbrushed out of the greatest scientific discovery of the twentieth century.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affect over one billion of the world's poorest people. More than 170,000 people die from NTDs each year, and many more suffer from blindness, disability, disfigurement, cognitive impairment, and stunted growth. Yet NTDs are treatable and preventable, and the annual cost of treatment is incredibly low.
In Under the Big Tree, public health leader Ellen Agler and award-winning writer Mojie Crigler tell the moving stories of those struggling with these diseases and the life-saving work that can be—and has been—done to combat these NTDs. They introduce listeners to people from all walks of life—from car washers in Lake Victoria and surgeons on motorbikes to under-resourced local nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and Big Pharma scientists—as they chronicle what has been called the largest public health program in the world.
On the one hand, the solutions are simple: deliver medication to people who need it and leverage local systems to offer prevention, treatment, and education. On the other hand, solutions are complex: navigating local and national politics, delivering treatment to some of the most remote, vulnerable communities, and coordinating global and local donors, international NGOs, thousands of health workers, and millions of citizens.

“A deceptively light treatment of mind-blowing technologies and their cultural, social and political impact. This book will put your mind on fire.”—Giulio Prisco, Hacked.com   Transhumanism is an international movement that advocates the use of science and technology to overcome the natural limitations experienced by humanity, through such developments as:   the Singularity—the creation of machine intelligences that exceed the capacities of our biological brainsthe ability to replicate individual minds and put them into solid-state bodies or virtual environmentsindividual control over mental and emotional states for enhancing functionalities and/or ecstasies   Some of this is happening now. Some it is still in the minds of dreamers.   In nearly ninety A-Z entries, Transcendence provides a multilayered look at the accelerating advances in artificial intelligence, cognitive science, genomics, information technology, nanotechnology, neuroscience, space exploration, synthetic biology, robotics, and virtual worlds that are making transhumanism a reality. Entries range from Cloning and Cyborg Feminism to Designer Babies and Memory-Editing Drugs. In addition, the book notes historical predecessors and personalities, both in mythology and history—ranging from Timothy Leary to Michael Jackson to Ray Kurzweil. It also introduces the culture around Transhumanism, covering all the geeky obsessions of the Transhumanist movement.   “A new book deciphering the surreal truths, questionable fictions, and high weirdness of the Singularity . . . This memoir of buying and transforming an abandoned olive farm “describes life in the South of France with lush, voluptuous appreciation” (Publishers Weekly). Presented with an opportunity to purchase a ten-acre property near Cannes, actress Carol Drinkwater and her film-producer fiancé, Michel, decide to take the plunge. It will take all their savings just for the down payment, but the beauty of the surrounding countryside and the promise of a new adventure seem worth the risk. As they work to clear the weeds and rehabilitate the abandoned farm, they meet Provence’s quirky locals, puzzle through France’s legal bureaucracy, explore the nearby Mediterranean islands, and encounter the region’s wildlife. This colorful memoir from the Sunday Times–bestselling author recounts one couple’s remarkable journey from being inspired but inexperienced new landowners to realizing their dream of a fulfilling, peaceful life on their own little plot of paradise. “Good-humored and well-written.” —The Washington Post “A fantasy come true, as it will be for many of the readers who yearn to experience the magic of southern France.” —The Austin Chronicle
