Summary

In classic British crime fiction, dazzling detective work is often the province of a brilliant amateur – whereas the humble police detective cuts a hapless figure. The twelve stories collected here strike a blow for the professionals, with teasing mysteries to challenge a hard-working police officer's persistence and scrupulous attention to detail. As in his previous anthologies for the British Library Crime Classics series, Martin Edwards introduces readers to fascinating neglected gems of British crime writing as well as uncovering lesser-known stories by the great novelists of the golden age. Each of these stories combines realism with entertainment, skilfully blending the conduct of a criminal investigation with a compelling murder-mystery plot.

The Little Match Girl is a short story by Danish poet and author Hans Christian Andersen. The story, about a dying child's dreams and hope, sheds light on the invisibility of the poor among the prosperous-a circumstance as familiar in Andersen's day as it is in our own.

Pearl S. Buck’s timeless masterpiece, the Pulitzer Prize–winning story of a farmer’s journey through China in the 1920sThe Good Earth is Buck’s classic story of Wang Lung, a Chinese peasant farmer, and his wife, O-lan, a former slave. With luck and hard work, the couple’s fortunes improve over the years: They are blessed with sons, and save steadily until one day they can afford to buy property in the House of Wang—the very house in which O-lan used to work. But success brings with it a new set of problems. Wang soon finds himself the target of jealousy, and as good harvests come and go, so does the social order. Will Wang’s family cherish the estate after he’s gone? And can his material success, the bedrock of his life, guarantee anything about his soul? Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the William Dean Howells Award, The Good Earth was an Oprah’s Book Club choice in 2004. A readers’ favorite for generations, this powerful and beautifully written fable resonates with universal themes of hope and family unity. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Pearl S. Buck including rare images from the author’s estate.

The short story is often viewed as an inferior relation to the Novel. But it is an art in itself. To take a story and distil its essence into fewer pages while keeping character and plot rounded and driven is not an easy task. Many try and many fail. In this series we look at short stories from many of our most accomplished writers. Miniature masterpieces with a lot to say. In this volume we examine some of the short stories of Alexandre Dumas. Alexandre Dumas born into poverty in 1802. Complicating his life was his African ancestry which gave rise to much racist behaviour against him despite being seven eighths French. Raised by his mother after his Fathers death by age 4 he was a voracious reader. At age 20, with the restoration of the French Monarchy he went to Paris to attend on The Duke of Orleans. Thereafter he began to write plays and two early successes allowed him to write full time. Dumas helped in the revolution of 1830 which installed his former employer as the new King. In his late 30s came the books he is so well known for “The Three Musketeers” and “The Count Of Monte Cristo” and with these and others his fame was set both in France and across the World. Dumas was a great wanderer spending years in Belgium, Russia and Italy. A prolific writer on politics and travel we look here at his short work; Martin Guerre. It is a work of great power holding the attention and asking questions about what is real and what if….. This stories are also available as an audiobook from our sister company Word Of Mouth. In his "Ghostly little book," Charles Dickens invents the modern concept of Christmas Spirit and offers one of the world's most adapted and imitated stories. We know Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim, and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, not only as fictional characters, but also as icons of the true meaning of Christmas in a world still plagued with avarice and cynicis
