Summary

Mark Hammar is an experienced Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence through the American Society for Quality. He has written this book to provide a comprehensive, step-by-step guide for AS9100 implementation, written in plain language, which can be understood by beginners with no prior knowledge of the standard. The main goal of the book is to provide a systematic picture of what AS9100 Rev D is all about, and how to make sure you didn’t forget something in your implementation. This book will explain how to use AS9100 Rev D as a framework, and to become fully compliant with this standard.

This book is written primarily for beginners in the field of QMS, and for people with moderate knowledge about AS9100. It is structured in such a way that someone with no prior experience or knowledge in the implementation of an aerospace QMS can quickly understand what it is about, and how to implement the whole project. If you do have experience with the standard but feel that you still have gaps in your knowledge, you’ll also find this book very helpful. This book provides implementation examples in small- and medium-sized organizations (i.e. companies with up to 500 employees). All the principles described here, however, are also applicable to larger organizations. That means, if you work for a larger company, you might also find this book useful.

So, if you are a quality manager, a quality management professional, head of the quality department or a project manager who is tasked with implementing AS9100 Rev D in a small- or mid-sized company, this book is perfect for you. This book will also be quite useful for consultants, since it makes an effort to present information in the most logical way to implement an aerospace QMS. By carefully reading this book, you will gain the know-how for your future consulting engagements.

However, what you may find most helpful in this book is the practical examples and answers to real-life questions that come up when implementing AS9100. These bits of advice come from the author’s experience both implementing AS9100, and from questions that he has been asked on a daily basis. After reading this book, you’ll be able to implement the standard yourself, since it will provide you with enough knowledge and tips to implement the requirements in a small or mid-sized company.

Thornton Waldo Burgess (January 14, 1874 – June 5, 1965) was a conservationist and author of children's stories. He loved the beauty of nature and its living creatures so much that he wrote about them for 50 years. By the time he retired, he had written more than 170 books. Many of his outdoor observations in nature were used as plots for his stories. In his first book, "Old Mother West Wind," published in 1910, the reader meets many of the characters found in later books and stories. These characters include Peter Rabbit, Jimmy Skunk, Sammy Jay, Bobby Raccoon, Joe Otter, Grandfather Frog, Billy Mink, Jerry Muskrat, Spotty the Turtle and of course, Old Mother West Wind and her Merry Little Breezes. Note to parents of very small children: in Chapter 15, little Tommy Trout gets eaten by a pickerel. (Summary by Wikipedia and Laurie Anne Walden.)

    51 BILLION TO ZERO
This is a summary book and complements Bill Gates’ new book, not replace it.
Bill Gates wants the reader to remember two key numbers regarding climate change. The first is 51 billion. The second is zero. Fifty-one billion is how many tons of greenhouse gases the world typically adds to the atmosphere every year. Although the figure may fluctuate annually, it most often increases. Zero greenhouse gases are what we need to dodge the worst effects of climate change. Humans need to brain up and cease pumping greenhouse gases into their surroundings. Although challenging because of scale--a grander endeavor has never before been attempted--if most countries can change their ways, we have a shot at avoiding some catastrophes.
Manufacturing, farming, traveling and just about every other life activity in modern times is associated with spewing out greenhouse gases. As the global population expands, especially in India and China, so will the modern lifestyle, and so will harmful gases.
Bill Gates reveals his optimism right out of the gate. He points out that we already employ some of the tools we will need, and that we can make the rest—that it’s not magic. We can make the right choices for consuming energy and foods. With a concerted and world effort on a timely basis, we can put a damper on greenhouse gas expansion.
Bill Gate’s compelling book informs us about why he believes we can achieve this and what it might entail. Through his Foundation, Gates shows that he became quite familiar with technology, education, general development, including energy, and global health. He feels dedicated to taking on climate change through a global effort.

Charles Darwin’s The Origin of Species (publ. 1859) is a pivotal work in scientific literature and arguably the pivotal work in evolutionary biology. The book’s full title is On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. It introduced the theory that populations evolve over the course of generations through a process of natural selection. It was controversial because it contradicted religious beliefs which underlay the then current theories of biology. Darwin’s book was the culmination of evidence he had accumulated on the voyage of the Beagle in the 1830s and added to through continuing investigations and experiments since his return. The award-winning journalist delves “into the confluence of modern airplane technology and pilot behavior to probe how and why flight disasters happen” (BookTrib).

Aviation automation has been pushed to its limits, with pilots increasingly relying on it. Autopilot, autothrottle, autoland, flight management systems, air data systems, inertial guidance systems. All these systems are only as good as their inputs which, incredibly, can go rogue. Even the automation itself is subject to unpredictable failure.

And what of the pilots? They began flight training with their hands on the throttle and yoke, and feet on the rudder pedals. Then they reached the pinnacle of their careers—airline pilot—and suddenly they were going hours without touching the controls other than for a few minutes on takeoff and landing. Are their skills eroding? Is their training sufficient to meet the demands of today’s planes?

The Dangers of Automation in Airliners delves deeply into these questions. You’ll be in the cockpits of the two doomed Boeing 737 MAXs, the Airbus A330 lost over the South Atlantic, and the Bombardier Q400 that stalled over Buffalo. You’ll discover exactly why a Boeing 777 smacked into a seawall, missing the runway on a beautiful summer morning. And you’ll watch pilots battling—sometimes winning and sometimes not—against automation run amok. This book also investigates the human factors at work. You’ll learn why pilots might overlook warnings or ignore cockpit alarms. You’ll observe automation failing to alert aircrews of what they crucially need to know while fighting to save their planes and their passengers.

The future of safe air travel depends on automation. This book tells its story.
