Summary

A “lively” memoir of a woman finding the cure for her broken heart in the world of ballroom dancing (Booklist).   Maria Finn’s husband was cheating. First she threw him out. Then she cried. Then she signed up for tango lessons.   It turned out that tango had a lot to teach about understanding love and loss, about learning how to follow and how to lead, how to live with style and flair, take risks, and sort out what it is you really want. As Maria’s world begins to revolve around the friendships she makes in dance class and the milongas (social dances) she regularly attends in New York City, we discover with her the fascinating culture, history, music, moves, and beauty of the Argentine tango.   With each new dance step she learns—the embrace, the walk, the sweep, the exit—she is one step closer to returning to the world of the living. Eventually Maria travels to Buenos Aires, the birthplace of tango—and finds the confidence to try romance again.

SubsidenceA daughter longs to guide her mother through the hardest of journeys of memory loss, paving a way with her own remembrance; for memory is an actor’s most powerful tool. Before the settling and subsidence of life, Hayley prepares to perform a show to honour her mother, Joan. Death is never convenient and despite the theatre being booked, posters printed, and tickets sold, it comes for Joan just before opening night. Subsidence gives grace to deep wounds laid bare as memory fails but love endures; deep, fathomless, patient love. A love that has come full circle, filled with hope and promise. The actor strides across grey days of grief, into the all-conquering silver spotlight of centerstage, to share a life well-loved and lived. Endorsement:	'Subsidence is a beautiful and tender rendering of memoir, driven by the author’s need to remember and honour her mother, who lived with dementia. O’Leary pulls the threads of memory together in a mesmerising weave: a gossamer spell. Her lived experience of theatre and her childhood with her mother are woven across timelines both past and present in this stunning experimental work. Subsidence is vital reading for those with loved ones experiencing memory loss.'–	Anna Jacobson (Author of Amnesia Findings)

Getting High - The Adventures of...

    Paolo Hewitt

Description Between 1994 and 1996, music writer Paolo Hewitt spent the greater part of his life on the road with Oasis, in the U.K., Europe and America. He came back with tales that would cement the legend of the brawling, effing, hedonistic, charismatic, confessional and extraordinarily talented Gallagher brothers, Noel and Liam, and their group. Hewitt is a rare and perceptive fly-on-the-wall during the band's hectic rise to the height of their powers, as their first two albums are released to the kind of excitement scarcely seen in British rock music since the sixties. Hewitt takes the Gallaghers' story right back to their parents' roots in Ireland, and the descriptions of Noel and Liam's childhoods in working-class Manchester reveal the seeds of their determination to make Oasis the force it became. Getting High is an illuminating, funny, sometimes shocking reminder of how big a band can get, and how quickly the insanity sets in. Oasis have today sold in excess of 70 million records worldwide. Hewitt's intimate account of this explosive and beloved band, in their prime, is a rock classic and a riveting narrative. Praise for Getting High: 'Paolo is the only person to speak about what it was like on the road with us because he's been there. He's been there, he's seen it, he's done it.' Noel Gallagher 'Top read.' Melody Maker 'Unlimited access to all areas of the Oasis bandwagon is the ace up this biography's sleeve.' Q '10/10 - sometimes you get what you pay for.' Esquire 'By adopting a fly-on-the-wall approach and writing Oasis's story as though it were a novel rather than a straight biography, he succeeds in entertaining, informing and occasionally putting you inside the head of the Gallagher brothers.' Hot Press 'In Getting High we get closer to the real Oasis, not the tabloid fancies, the music press stereotypes of Noel the genius, Liam the wanker and three other blokes who don't count. Hewitt paints an engrossing and uplifting portrait of one of the most important bands of the decade.' The Word and Issue 'Getting High is refreshingly well written' Total Guitar 'Compelling drama' Manchester Evening News 'If you only buy one book about Oasis, then make sure it's this one.' FHM 'This well-researched tome chronicles many a pivotal moment in Oasis's history and is filled with plenty of ribald anecdotes.' NME 'Head and shoulders above every other Oasis book. I hated finishing it so much I read it again.' Irvine Welsh

It's performed with a vast range of instruments and vocal techniques and the common saying ""it's music to my ears"" underlines the notion that music is quite simply something people enjoy listening to! In every culture, music is an important part of people's way of life, as it plays a key role in religious rituals, rites of passage ceremonies, social activities and cultural activities of every type.

Taking us into the minds of artists—from contemporary stars to old masters—See What You're Missing shows us how to look and experience the world with their heightened awareness.Artists are expert lookers: they have learned to pay attention. The rest of us spend most of our time on autopilot, rushing from place to place, our overfamiliarity blinding us to the marvelous, life-affirming phenomena of our world. But that doesn't have to be the case.In his inimitable engaging style, Will Gompertz takes us into the minds of artists—from contemporary stars to old masters, the well-known to the lesser-so, and from around the world—to show us how to look and experience the world with their heightened awareness. In See What You're Missing we learn, for example, how Hasegawa Tohaku can help us to see beauty, how David Hockney helps us to see color, and how Frida Kahlo can help us see pain. In doing so we come to know the exhilarating feeling of being truly alive. See What You're Missing is at once entertaining and enlightening art history while delivering empowering new insights to its listener.
