Summary

Margery Williams’s magical nursery tale of a stuffed rabbit and his quest to become real Christmas morning, the room filled with the hustle and bustle of preparation, a rabbit stitched of velveteen sits perched on top of the little boy’s stocking. Those first two hours are the best of the young rabbit’s life: filled with hugs and play. But like most children, the boy is fickle and easily distracted—after Christmas morning, the Velveteen Rabbit is forgotten.   Shy and intimidated by the new mechanical toys who sneer at him for being simple, the sawdust-filled rabbit sits quietly at the top of the toy closet, aching to be loved the way he was that wonderful Christmas morning. He’s soon taken in by the wise old Skin Horse, who sets him straight on the way to become real. It’s not about expensive mechanisms or shiny paint jobs. No, becoming real is all about the unadulterated love of a child.  The Velveteen Rabbit is a timeless story about the importance of love, honesty, and friendship.   This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

“A perceptive, poignant novel of middle-school identity and friendship” from the author of Prettiest Doll (The Horn Book).   Sarah promised Marjorie when they were five years old that they would be best friends forever. But that was before seventh grade, when everything changed—everything except Marjorie. While Sarah wants to meet new people and try new things, Marjorie still likes doing the same things they always did. It seems the more time the two girls spend together, the more time Sarah wants to spend apart. How did a promise that was so easy to make become so hard to keep?   With beautifully drawn characters and vivid details, this incisive novel portrays middle school in all its complexity—both the promise of what is to come and the pain of what must be left behind.   This ebook includes a sample chapter of Prettiest Doll.   “In this quiet, strongly realistic novel, Willner-Pardo explores the intricacies of preadolescent social life, where the worst possible thing is to be ‘weird.’” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)   “The sensitively drawn and satisfying conclusion will have girls nodding their heads with understanding as Sarah struggles with the promise she made years ago. A heartwarming story about life’s unexpected lessons, through the eyes of a girl experiencing them for the first time.” —School Library Journal   “The dialogue is right-on, and readers will recognize the vicious social warfare from the lunchroom to the school bus.” —Booklist

“[The] fourth of the light-hearted Arthurian Knights’ Tales . . . a 21st-century spin on the ancient legends” from the author of The Squire’s Tales (Kirkus Reviews, starred review).   Many years ago, the storytellers say, the great King Arthur brought justice to England with the help of his gallant knights of the roundtable. While most of King Arthur’s knights freely chose a life of duty, for Sir Balin the Ill-Fated, destiny was foretold in a prophecy. And seriously, “ill-fated” is right there in his title, so Balin’s not surprised when things go sour. Still, no matter how dire the task, a loyal and gallant knight never refuses adventure! Will Sir Balin finally discover his true destiny? And which ill-fated path will he have to choose? Join Balin on this, the noblest quest of all.   “Lots of humor, wordplay, and numerous twists and turns.” —School Library Journal  Praise for The Knights’ Tales series   “With his quirky sense of myth and legend and tongue-in-cheek humor, [Morris] brings to life the court of King Arthur and his knights.” —Curled Up with a Good Kid’s Book   “The book’s brevity and humor make it accessible to reluctant readers, and it is a fantastic read-aloud.” —School Library Journal   “This trim novel, with simple vocabulary and brief, witty chapters, is an ideal fit for early readers . . . but fans of the legendary characters may find particular delight in this irreverent and unabashedly silly exploration of Arthur’s court and his most influential knight.” —The Bulletin   “This is often quite funny, and just exciting enough to capture the attention of budding young Arthur-philes.” —Booklist

This beautifully illustrated children’s book explores how Walt Whitman was affected by the Civil War and inspired by President Lincoln.

O Captain, My Captain tells the story of one of America’s greatest poets and how he was inspired by one of America’s greatest presidents. Whitman and Lincoln shared the national stage in Washington, DC, during the Civil War. Though the two men never met, Whitman would often see Lincoln’s carriage on the road. The president was never far from the poet’s mind, and Lincoln’s “grace under pressure” was something Whitman returned to again and again in his poetry.

Whitman witnessed Lincoln’s second inauguration and mourned along with America as Lincoln’s funeral train wound its way across the landscape to his final resting place. The book includes the poem “O Captain! My Captain!” and an excerpt from “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d,” as well as brief bios of Lincoln and Whitman, a timeline of Civil War events, endnotes, and a bibliography.
