Summary

The air war over the critical Eastern Front is illustrated with 120 specially selected and informatively captioned photographs in this striking new book. Initial success in Russia during the summer of 1941 gave way to desperate days after Stalingrad and the failure of Germany's last major offensive in 1943. Subsequently the Luftwaffe was stripped of its newest fighters for the defense of the Reich and lost air superiority to the Red Air Force. Unusual scenes include bombed-out Russian aircraft abandoned during the initial German advance and the use of horses and oxen to haul supplies and even aircraft, as fuel became scarce toward the end of the war.
Available since: 07/18/1997.

Laurel and Hardy were a British-American comedy duo act during the early era of American cinema, consisting of Englishman Stan Laurel (1890–1965) and American Oliver Hardy (1892–1957). Starting their career as a duo in the silent film era, they later successfully transitioned to "talkies.” From the late 1920s to the mid-1950s, they were internationally famous for their slapstick comedy, with Laurel playing the clumsy, childlike friend to Hardy's pompous bully.

Nineteen leading literary writers from around the globe offer timely, haunting first-person reflections on how climate change has altered their livesIn this riveting anthology, leading literary writers reflect on how climate change has altered their lives, revealing the personal and haunting consequences of this global threat. In the opening essay, National Book Award finalist Lydia Millet mourns the end of the Saguaro cacti in her Arizona backyard due to drought. Later, Omar El Akkad contemplates how the rise of temperatures in the Middle East is destroying his home and the wellspring of his art. Gabrielle Bellot reflects on how a bizarre lionfish invasion devastated the coral reef near her home in the Caribbean—a precursor to even stranger events to come. Traveling through Nebraska, Terese Svoboda witnesses cougars running across highways and showing up in kindergartens. As the stories unfold—from Antarctica to Australia, New Hampshire to New York—an intimate portrait of a climate-changed world emerges, captured by writers whose lives jostle against incongruous memories of familiar places that have been transformed in startling ways.

Gettin' Poetic on Anaesthetic is a light-hearted memoir guaranteed to make you smile, laugh, or even wet your pants! A memoir is all about the ability to see life through the writer's eyes. Allow yourself to see the world through Simon's and you will read an honest, witty and sometimes whacky portrayal of what it's like to stay in an NHS hospital today. It starts by focusing on life growing up in Essex and the accidents he had as a boy, but then centres around the operation that prompted the title. Full of comedy and nostalgia, Simon gives you some cringe-worthy yet hilarious accounts of his life, mostly at his expense. If you have been, or indeed are about to go in to hospital for an operation, Gettin' Poetic on Anaesthetic could be the perfect medicine.
