Summary

This book is part introduction to, part reflective examination of, the idea and ideal of effective altruism. Its aim is to examine the core question of effective altruism: how can we best help others? A question that in turn forces us to contemplate what helping others, effectively or otherwise, really entails. Here the book argues that the greatest help we can provide is to reduce extreme suffering for all sentient beings, and then goes on to provide some suggestions for how this might best be done.

"This book provides an accessible introduction to important ideas that anyone interested in changing the world for the better should seriously consider. It explains some crucial issues often overlooked in the effective altruist literature, and examines others from a fresh perspective. It does a great job at rethinking several common assumptions, and points at biases that can make it hard to think clearly about which causes might be most worth pursuing. It can thus be a very useful tool for those who want to make a big difference."
Oscar Horta, professor of moral philosophy at University of Santiago de Compostela, co-founder of Animal Ethics, author of Un paso adelante en defensa de los animales.

"Magnus Vinding's inquiring mind leaves few stones unturned as he explores key issues and ideas related to ethics and consciousness. What starts off as a good overview of effective altruism and the concepts needed to apply it better, progresses into a deeper exploration of the basis for the underlying values and the extraordinary importance of prioritising the prevention of intense suffering of all sentient beings. A must-read for any current or aspiring effective altruist, and for social activists in general."
Jonathan Leighton, founder of the Organisation for the Prevention of Intense Suffering, author of The Battle for Compassion: Ethics in an Apathetic Universe.

"Brilliant. A clear, fair-minded and authoritative survey of Effective Altruism. Magnus Vinding makes a powerful case for suffering-focused ethics. How can each of us act most effectively to help all sentient beings? Highly recommended."
David Pearce, co-founder of the World Transhumanist Association / Humanity+, author of The Hedonistic Imperative and Can Biotechnology Abolish Suffering?

"Magnus Vinding's new book is a compelling and accessible guide to the rationale of Effective Altruism. It empowers readers to comprehend the unique opportunity we have to effectively help others with our limited resources. The author encourages us to expand our moral circle to include all present and future non-human sentient beings in our altruistic endeavors. The final chapters also provide a very helpful introduction to "s-risks" and suffering-focused ethics to those less familiar with these subjects."
Lara André, researcher at Animal Ethics and at the Centre for Ethics, Politics and Society of the University of Minho.

"There has never been a better moment in time to jump into the Effective Altruism movement or deepen your involvement. And in this journey, Vinding's book will be of invaluable aid. It is a gold mine of insights and provocative ideas for aspiring and seasoned Effective Altruists alike. I've been involved in Effective Altruism for years, but Vinding's book taught me a ton and challenged my assumptions. This book will help you be, in Vinding's words, "the light that brightens the darkness of the world." Good luck!"

Astronomer and science writer David Whitehouse takes us on a journey through the evolving cosmos as he considers humankind's place in the universe - and how our survival depends on otherworldly perspectives.
From the Earth to the depths of outer space, this inspiring book shows how human evolution has been intertwined with the workings of the cosmos from the very beginning, and what the far-distant future may hold, both for the universe and for ourselves.
Given enough time, Whitehouse contends, we must communicate with intelligent aliens whose divergent perspective will transform our understanding of the universe. First contact may even come sooner than we think. We have already transmitted signals towards promising exoplanets. If, say, Gliese 581d harbours life, the return signal could reach us in 2051.
Drawing the thread of human consciousness from the cave to the cosmos, the acclaimed author of Apollo 11: The Inside Story charts our future journey to the end of space and time and considers whether something of humanity could remain at the end of it all.

As one of America's leading geriatric psychiatrists, Dr. Marc Agronin sees both the sickest and the healthiest of seniors. Many authors can talk about aging from their particular vantage points, but Dr. Agronin is on the front lines as he counsels and treats elderly individuals and their loved ones on a daily basis. The latest scientific research and Dr. Agronin's first-hand experience are brilliantly distilled in The End of Old Age—a call to no longer see aging as an implacable enemy and to start seeing it as a developmental force for enhancing well-being, meaning, and longevity.
Throughout The End of Old Age, the focus is squarely on "So what does this mean for me and my family?" In a PDF accompanying the audiobook, Dr. Agronin provides simple but revealing charts that you can fill out to identify, develop, and optimize your unique age-given strengths. It's nothing short of an action plan to help you age better by improving how you value the aging process, guide yourself through stress, and find ways to creatively address change for the best possible experience and outcome.

This memoir of life in the American desert by the author of The Monkey Wrench Gang is a nature writing classic on par with Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring.   In Desert Solitaire, Edward Abbey recounts his many escapades, adventures, and epiphanies as an Arches National Park ranger outside Moab, Utah. Brimming with arresting insights, impassioned arguments for wilderness conservation, and a raconteur’s wit, it is one of Abbey’s most critically acclaimed works.   Through stories and philosophical musings, Abbey reflects on the condition of our remaining wilderness, the future of a civilization, and his own internal struggle with morality. As the world continues its rapid development, Abbey’s cry to maintain the natural beauty of the West remains just as relevant today as when this book first appeared in 1968.

Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now is a timely call-to-arms from a Silicon Valley pioneer.
You might have trouble imagining life without your social media accounts, but virtual reality pioneer Jaron Lanier insists that we're better off without them. In his important new audiobook, Lanier, who participates in no social media, offers powerful and personal reasons for all of us to leave these dangerous online platforms behind before it's too late.
Lanier's reasons for freeing ourselves from social media's poisonous grip include its tendency to bring out the worst in us, to make politics terrifying, to trick us with illusions of popularity and success, to twist our relationship with the truth, to disconnect us from other people even as we are more "connected" than ever, to rob us of our free will with relentless targeted ads. How can we remain autonomous in a world where we are under continual surveillance and are constantly being prodded by algorithms run by some of the richest corporations in history that have no way of making money other than being paid to manipulate our behavior? How could the "benefits" of social media possibly outweigh the catastrophic losses to our personal dignity, happiness, and freedom?
Lanier remains a tech optimist, so while demonstrating the evil that rules social media business models today, he also envisions a humanistic setting for social networking that can direct us towarda richer and fuller way of living and connecting with our world.

It's my inherent belief that you are the only person on this earth who knows your body better than anyone else. Our bodies talk to us all day, every day, and we need to be listening to what they're saying.
This is not a story about badmouthing general practitioners and ridiculing the medical fraternity. It's a centuries-old notion that doctors are healers and near to gods, but they are mere mortals and their expertise is limited.
You should be taking control of and responsibility for your own health and wellbeing – pure and simple.
In Doctors are not gods, Michelle Cox shares her very personal experiences of both her mother being medically mistreated and her own case of being misdiagnosed for months before needing emergency surgery for cervical cancer.
With an attitude of learning from mistakes, Michelle asks what she herself could have done better in order to be the boss of her own health and wellbeing in future and stop handing over the power of something so important to others.
This book is about creating a working relationship with your medical professionals to ensure you are responsible for your own health, especially in a world where the healthcare landscape is changing so rapidly.
