Summary

The twelve stories in this anthology are some of the most riveting narratives penned by Macario Pineda in a writing career that lasted for less than two decades. Retold in English by Ms. Soledad S. Reyes, Macario Pineda’s Love in the Rice Fields and Other Short Stories offer readers a series of scenes in which various characters come alive in their respective journeys through life’s various stages—the idyllic innocence of youth, the pleasure and agony of young love, the disillusionment of old age, and the experience of death. Each story slowly leads its characters to an epiphany, for example, of the unconditional nature of a mother’s love, of war and its evils, of death and what possibly transpires after.

In this collection of short stories, Pineda is the consummate chronicler of the barrio, a gentle historian, a masterful painter, a great Filipino artist who painstakingly depicted the varied aspects of the past he loved—an age slowly disappearing from the consciousness of most Filipinos in a world slowly deteriorating due to colonialism and its aftermath.

From a World War I veteran: A novel of the years-long, brutal battle at Ypres, Belgium, and what it did to the city and the men who fought there. In 1915, a platoon of inexperienced British soldiers arrives in Flanders, excited and anxious for what is to come. But they soon find themselves at Ypres, where the battle-weary Allied troops have dug in and slaughter surrounds them. Soldiers, from privates to senior officers of the wider battalion, frozen by terror and overwhelmed by the relentless stress as the battle drags on, want nothing more than to hide. Young, dedicated officer Freddy Mann is in the thick of it with his men—burying the dead, experiencing the terror of bombardment, and being picked off by snipers. On a journey from idealistic officer barely out of school to battle-hardened cynic barely hanging on as those around him are cut down, Mann suffers a crisis of faith as he loses his belief in the war and everything he once stood for. Written by a WWI veteran, Pass Guard at Ypres brings to life the harrowing realities of the Great War, portraying years of lengthy fighting in—and the pivotal strategic role of—the ancient and once-peaceful town on the bank of the Ieperlee River.

In Agatha Christie’s baffling detective story, Nemesis, a letter from a dead man instructs Miss Marple how to conduct an investigation into a puzzlingly unspecific crime.
In utter disbelief, Miss Marple read the letter addressed to her from the recently deceased Mr. Rafiel—an acquaintance she had met briefly on her travels. He had left instructions for her to investigate a crime after his death. The only problem was, he had failed to tell her who was involved or where and when the crime had been committed. It was most intriguing.
Soon she is faced with a new crime—the ultimate crime—murder. It seems someone is adamant that past evils remained buried. . . .

GRACE ON THE HORIZON is the second full-length novel in The White Sails Series. Grace and Seamus, united by their past experiences, are adrift on a raft of shame in the sea of 1830s London society. After a personal tragedy, Grace's desperation to leave London forces Seamus to accept a dubious commission on the private explorer, Clover.
With the expedition financed by Colonel Hamilton and his private backers, Seamus is tasked with mapping a round-the-world voyage. But Colonel Hamilton has an additional package that requires delivering—Father Babcock—a priest wanted for murder. The church wants Babcock transported far from England to set up a new mission in South America.
Battling his overprotectiveness, Seamus breaks his oath to always tell Grace the truth and hides Babcock's identity from her. But the journey aboard the Clover is far from smooth sailing, and Grace suspects a saboteur. Trapped within the ship's confines, she must learn to forgive Seamus's well-intentioned duplicity and determine who wishes them harm—because now she also has her unborn child to protect.
Is it an aggrieved member of the Admiralty who believes Seamus disgraced the service by resigning his command to chase after Grace? Perhaps Grace's father, Lord Flint, seeking revenge against her for ruining the family name? Or a jealous suitor determined to ruin the life Grace is trying to build with Seamus?
From the damp cobbled streets of London, around the freezing stormy tip of Cape Horn, and into the scorching dusty bush of New Holland, GRACE ON THE HORIZON promises another romantic high-seas adventure bursting with action and suspense.
