Praise from Librarians and Booksellers
"What a strange, gorgeous anthology! M.F.K. Fisher provides a delightful selection of food writing across history and across countries through the voices of inimitable writers. She provides the type of banter you’d expect from Ms. Fisher. Sassy, deeply knowledgeable. I can’t help but be seduced by her pairings—Charles Lamb’s story about the origin of roast suckling pigs with exquisite detail of their crisp heady crackling and explosive jelly eyes next to Lin Yutang’s response to how nineteenth-century Chinese scholars would gather 'under the autumn moon or in the wilderness of chrysanthemums' and bring duck from one region, wine from another. This was the way to meditate and create art! I loved the thick selections of Tolstoy and Gogol, the way she combines the eatings of Wonderland and Utopia. And yeah, there are some racist bits in the intro: 'African savages know when they roast a tiger’s heart for their god.' I don’t know what to make of that and some of what she says about the Chinese. But I do love Mary Frances's writing and passion so very much. There is delight and discovery in her words. She shares that love and invites you to feast with her." ––Young Eun Yook, Literati Bookstore (Ann Arbor, MI)

“Shows us that only by opening our minds and our hearts to life’s wonderful unpredictability can we truly live  . . . a wise and welcome book.” —Marcus Buckingham, New York Times-bestselling author of Love and Work   Like many of us, Bob Miglani felt overwhelmed and anxious. He worried constantly about his job, his finances, and his family. It was a chance invitation to India, the land of his birth, that finally freed him.   India, Miglani writes, is “the capital of chaos”: over a billion people living on one-third the space of the United States. And it was there that he learned to let go. The secret is to stop trying to control the chaos and focus on what you can control—your own actions, words, and thoughts. Move forward, make mistakes, trust your intuition, find your purpose.   In this inspiring book, Miglani shares the experiences and encounters that helped him finally get it. What happens when you find yourself in an Indian village with no money and a plane to catch? How could an educated urban woman agree to a marriage after two dates? What keeps a rural health worker motivated despite the enormous need and such limited ability to help? What does trying to catch an insanely overcrowded bus teach you about perfection? Embracing the chaos, Miglani found, leads us down paths we never would have walked on, and brings out strengths we never knew existed inside of us.

A single mother of five, Ellen Rogers has endured her fair share of tragedy, having lost both her first husband and stepdaughter to cancer. But nothing could have prepared Rogers for the June 2005 car accident that left her son Ned-now twenty-five years old-a quadriplegic with a brain injury. The road to Ned's recovery was long and discouraging, but when Helping Hands: Monkey Helpers for the Disabled stepped in to provide him with a service animal to help him cope with his disabilities, things turned around. Kasey-an adorable, mischievous, fun-loving capuchin monkey-helped Ned and his family to see the world in a new way. In this extraordinary memoir, Rogers paints a vivid portrait of a large and loving family and the challenges that they face together. She shares the low points (the phone call that changed her son's life), the high points (the monkey play that led to Ned's increased mobility), and the strangely in-between (bathing Kasey in the kitchen sink) with equal parts heart and humor. The story of an ordinary family thrust into extraordinary circumstances, this inspiring book proves that old adage: where there's life, there's hope.

Ukiyo-e (‘pictures of the floating world’) is a branch of Japanese art which originated during the period of prosperity in Edo (1615-1868). Characteristic of this period, the prints are the collective work of an artist, an engraver, and a printer. Created on account of their low cost thanks to the progression of the technique, they represent daily life, women, actors of kabuki theatre, or even sumo wrestlers. Landscape would also later establish itself as a favourite subject. Moronobu, the founder, Shunsho, Utamaro, Hokusai, and even Hiroshige are the most widely-celebrated artists of the movement. In 1868, Japan opened up to the West. The masterful technique, the delicacy of the works, and their graphic precision immediately seduced the West and influenced greats such as the Impressionists, Van Gogh, and Klimt. This is known as the period of ‘Japonisme’. Through a thematic analysis, Woldemar von Seidlitz and Dora Amsden implicitly underline the immense influence which this movement had on the entire artistic scene of the West. These magnificent prints represent the evolution of the feminine ideal, the place of the Gods, and the importance accorded to landscape, and are also an invaluable witness to a society now long gone.
