Summary

A history and handbook explaining this ancient craft, including step-by-step instructions for beginners.   This book offers a journey through the history of the ancient craft of felting from the earliest times, when people first discovered that animal fiber, moisture, and friction created a durable, warm fabric. Felt has been used for everything from apparel to housing; it has been used for practical, decorative, and even religious applications. This book looks at the rise and fall of felting through history and into the industrial era, including its importance to the hat-making industry.   The second part of the book brings us to the modern—and some might say, golden—era of artisanal felting with interviews from felters and textile artists generously sharing their creative process. Finally, if you are inspired to try this fascinating craft, there are step-by-step instructions for both wet and needle felting, and a useful list of resources to get you started on your own felt-making journey.

“Hands down, the best humor book about family life I have ever read.” —Nikki Knepper, author of Moms Who Drink and Swear   Comedian/blogger/family man Jason Good delivers a laugh-out-loud reminder that everything is easier and more fun when approached with a sense of humor—especially parenting. Each list in this book captures a perfect (or perfectly terrible) aspect of parenthood while at the same time wholeheartedly embracing every moment: “You Deserve a Break” offers ideas for downtime, such as giving blood and untangling cords, while “Self-Help from a Three-Year-Old” collects such wisdom as “If you fall down, stay down. Someone will pick you up eventually.” Sweet, sincere, and painfully funny, This is Ridiculous, This is Amazing is ideal for parents who could use a laugh—and isn’t that every single one of them?   “His blog is great, but his first book is even better.” —Parade   “Parents will appreciate Good’s offbeat outlook and quirky one-liners.” —Publishers Weekly

This colorful history explores New York’s coffee culture from the brew’s initial arrival in the 1600s to today’s artisanal connoisseurs.   The coffee industry was made for New York: complex, diverse, fascinating and full of attitude. Since arriving in seventeenth-century New Amsterdam, coffee held patriotic significance during wartime, fueled industrial revolution and transformed the city's foodways. The New York Coffee Exchange opened tumultuously in the Gilded Age. Alice Foote MacDougall founded a 1920s coffeehouse empire. In the same decade, Brooklyn teenager William Black started Chock Full o’Nuts with $250 and a dream.   Today, third wave coffeeshops like Joe and Ninth Street Espresso offer single origin pour overs and push the limits of latte art. Through stories, interviews and photographs, author and coffee professional Erin Meister shares Gotham’s caffeinated past and explores the coffee-related reasons why the city never sleeps.

'School's out! The distant music of an ice cream van is a familiar sound near my house. It reminds me of summer days spent running around the Phoenix Park, playing frisbee and rolling down hills, wearing ourselves out until it was time to relax with a creamy 99. As an adult, I still love going to the park (without the rolling down hills part!) and the odd time I even indulge in some nostalgia by queuing with the kids for an enormous, super-soft whippy. July days are great days' Sophie!
    Enjoy gorgeous July recipes, including:
    - Classic Carbonara
    - Cherry Clafoutis
    - Best-Ever Steak Sandwich
    - Meringue Nests with Raspberry Cream Filling
    - Crispy Caramelised Chicken Thighs with Lemon and Coriander Rice
    - Quick Banoffee Pie

Southern Railway Gallery is the first volume in a new series of picture books, designed to be of interest to railway historians and modellers. The series subjects are themed to include an interesting mixture of useful historic illustrations, depicting locomotives, rolling stock and infrastructure.Southern Railway Gallery covers the history of the Southern Railway from its beginings in 1923, to nationalisation in 1948, covering most aspects of its fascinating history and operations. The book looks at aspects of the Southern from the early years in the early 1920s, when the company had old worn-out stock on many of its lines, through to the introduction of new modern rolling stock and the electrification of much of its network in Kent, Sussex, Surrey and parts of Hampshire. The company operated an extensive rail and bus network on the Isle of Wight, which covered the whole island and is well remembered to this day.Although the Southern introduced a number of modern new steam classes, its main goal was to electrify as much of the network as possible, however this did not preclude the company from introducing two classes of successful Pacific type locomotives in the 1940s.The company owned and operated docks and harbours throughout its existence, having an extensive fleet of ferries and cargo vessels, some of which served with the Royal Navy in the Second World War as hospital ships. The Southern, also operated bus and road services, which covered many areas not served by a local railway station on the system. The Southern Railway ceased to exist at midnight on 31 December 1947, after a remarkable existence of twenty-four years.
