Summary

This memoir is based on the true story of a woman named Luna, whose life was deeply impacted by alexithymia, a condition caused by untreated Complex PTSD. Her trauma stems from being a victim of the 1999 Poso conflict in Indonesia.

The narrative begins with her upbringing, marked by complex challenges: the struggle to adapt to a mixed socio-cultural environment, the neglect she endured before and after the conflict, and her eventual survival against these overwhelming odds. Her journey, one that few in Indonesia experience, leads her to develop alexithymia, a rare condition that affects emotional awareness and expression.

Through Luna's eyes, this book explores how her 'strangeness' in social interactions shaped her life decisions in ways most people would never imagine. Her unique condition, often misunderstood, becomes the lens through which we witness her resilience in the face of adversity.

Luna's story sheds light on the broader struggles faced by neurodivergent individuals – those often labelled as 'different' or 'useless' by societal standards. Her journey serves as an inspiration to anyone who has ever felt marginalized. It challenges the notion that the human right to live is sufficient; it calls for the right to be fully accepted and understood. Through Luna's experiences, readers will gain insight into how beauty and art can be perceived and expressed by someone whose emotional landscape is unlike the rest of us.

Vivien Leigh was one of the greatest film and theatrical stars of the 1930s, '40s, and '50s. Her Oscar-winning performances in Gone With the Wind and A Streetcar Named Desire have cemented her status as an icon of Hollywood.

From 1940 to 1960, Leigh was married to Sir Laurence Olivier, and together they were considered the royal couple of British theater. Indeed, their romance and acting partnerships captured the imagination of the public around the world.

Behind the scenes, however, Leigh's personal life was marred by manic depression. Largely misunderstood and subjected to barbaric mistreatment at the hands of her doctors, she would also suffer the heartbreak of Olivier's infidelity. Contributing to her image as a tragic heroine, she would die at the age of fifty-three.

Unlike previous biographies, Where Madness Lies begins in 1953 when Leigh suffered a nervous breakdown and was institutionalized. The tragic story unfolds as she tries to rebuild her life, salvage her career, and save her marriage.

Featuring a wealth of unpublished material—including private correspondence—Lyndsy Spence reveals how Leigh tragically fell victim to the draconian medical practices of the era.

Winner of the Kekoo Naoroji Award
Doug Scott was a legend among mountaineers. His expeditions, undertaken over a period of five decades, are unparalleled achievements. This book describes the extraordinary drama of them all, from the Himalaya to New Zealand, Patagonia, Yosemite and Alaska. It includes his famous 'epic' on The Ogre, one of the hardest peaks in the world to climb, his ascent of Kangchenjunga without supplementary oxygen and his ascent, with Dougal Haston, of Everest in 1975.
Catherine Moorehead also uncovers the elusive man behind the obsessive mountaineer. From his rumbustious youth in Nottingham through two tempestuous marriages to a secure third marriage, she shows how Scott matured in thought and action as his formidable global reputation increased. In doing so she reveals him to be a clash of opposites, an infuriating monomaniac who took extraordinary risks yet who developed a deep interest in Buddhism and inspired widespread affection.
Scott spent almost as long as his climbing career in founding and developing Community Action Nepal, providing schools and health posts in remote parts of Nepal, where he is still much revered. Doug Scott died in 2020.

Not a memoir, not a manual, not history, and not fiction: this is a scroll. A lived document that uncoils across frostbitten steppe and borderland camps, where drills turn, deals twist, and dignity is held together with duct tape and vodka-stained humor.
From Ukraine to Sakhalin, from mud-choked rigs to government saunas, these field-earned ledgers reveal how people survive, adapt, and build in places where permits arrive after the pipelines are already pumping. Some of it reads like farce, some like heartbreak, much like both at once.
A generator resurrected with foil and candlelight becomes a choir, a pickup patched with tape and faith passes inspection, and a nation under strain shows a resilience that still shakes the world today.
This is not a sober account, but it is an honest one: a record of compromises, improvisations, and grit at the edge of empire, remembering what the spreadsheets never could.
