Nas was playing a role on Illmatic, even if it was himself. By constructing this persona, Nas not only laid out his own career for the next decade plus, but the careers of dozens of other rappers who were able to use their considerable skills to develop similar personas. His brazen ambition has become a road map for every rapper who hopes to reach an artistic peak. It seems right that Nas would make Illmatic at the age when maturity begins to turn boys into men. This was, in many regards, the first album of the rest of hip hop’s life.A decade and a half ago, Illmatic launched one of the most storied careers in hip hop, and cemented New York’s place as the genre’s epicenter. With this in-depth look at the record, Matthew Gasteier explores the competing themes that run through Nas’s masterpiece and finds a compelling journey into adulthood. Combining a history of Nas’s early years with interviews from many of the most important people associated with the album, this book provides new information and context for what many consider to be the greatest hip hop record ever made.

The Waldhaus Hotel in Sils Maria was built in between 1905 and 1908 for the experienced hotelier Josef Giger-Nigg according to the plans of architect Karl Koller, who was gaining a reputation as a hotel architect in the Engadine at that time. Both the Waldhaus’s exterior and interiors reveal the transition from the opulent style of the Belle Époque to the simple lines that marked the beginning of the 20th century. The Waldhaus, largely preserved and maintained in its original state, is one of the few five-star hotels to have remained in the hands of the same family since its opening. Even now, it is personally managed by the founding family, now in its fifth generation. Their steadfast dedication to maintaining a long hotel tradition (“a family affair since 1908”) and their highly professional approach to the preservation of the historic property (complete with its own little museum) have recently been honored with several prestigious awards.

Old-fashioned fans are today mostly appreciated for the craftsmanship and delicacy with which they were produced. But in former times they had their own special function in the hands of women in certain ranks of society. Not just useful articles, they were powerful transmitters of messages in their own unique code. With deft movements of their fans corresponding to this code, women were able to signal their thoughts and their intentions to their admirers without the necessity of a single word's being spoken.

    ABOUT THE FILM
The Prestige is a 2006 psychological thriller directed by Christopher Nolan. Set in 19th-century London, it follows two rival magicians, Robert Angier and Alfred Borden, who are obsessed with outdoing each other through their illusions. Their rivalry intensifies as they both create increasingly dangerous and elaborate tricks. The film explores themes of obsession, sacrifice, deception, and the blurred line between reality and illusion. As each magician becomes more consumed by their quest for greatness, the cost of their rivalry grows, leading to personal and professional consequences. The narrative weaves through time, keeping the audience guessing.

    TRIVIA SAMPLES:

“The word "prestige" originally meant a trick, from the Latin "praestigium," meaning "illusion."”

“Nikola Tesla was a world-renowned inventor, physicist, and engineer. For a time, he conducted electrical experiments at his lab in Colorado Springs, where he was also known for his eccentric behavior.”

“The editing of the film includes one hundred forty-six time jump cuts, where the next shot either flashes back or skips ahead to another time period in the storyline. This averages to almost one timeline jump per minute of the movie.”

Summer in Paris, 1783. The Louvre steps, too hot and no breeze, the air electric with the heady anticipation of a coming storm: the year's Royal Salon. Men and women of every estate are united under art: to love it, to despise it, to gossip endlessly about it.

Exhibiting at the Royal Salon was not for the faint of heart, and it was never intended for women.

    Enter Adélaïde Labille-Guiard . . .

Born in Paris in 1749, Adélaïde Labille-Guiard rose from shopkeeper's daughter to an official portraitist of the royal court—only to have her achievements reduced to ash by the French Revolution. While she defied societal barriers to become a member of the exclusive Académie Royale, she left behind few writings, and her legacy was long overshadowed by celebrated portraitist and memoirist Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun.

But Adélaïde Labille-Guiard's story lives on. In this engaging biography, Bridget Quinn applies her insightful interpretation of art history to Labille-Guiard's life. Quinn expertly blends close analyses of paintings with broader context about the era and inserts delicately fictionalized interpersonal scenes that fill the gaps in the historical record.
