Summary

Originally published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869, “Little Women” is a novel by American author Louisa May Alcott. Based on her own life, the story follows the four sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy—and chronicles their transition from childhood to womanhood. “Little Women” became incredibly popular when first published and remains widely-read today. Louisa May Alcott (1832 – 1888) was an American short story writer, novelist, and poet most famous for writing this novel, as well as its sequels “Little Men” and “Jo's Boys”. She grew up in New England and became associated with numerous notable intellectuals of her time, including Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Henry David Thoreau. Other notable works by this author include: "An Old-Fashioned Girl" (1886), "Eight Cousins" (1869), and "A Long Fatal Love Chase" (1875). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. The eagerness with which the first volume of Emily Dickinson’s poems has been read shows very clearly that all our alleged modern artificiality does not prevent a prompt appreciation of the qualities of directness and simplicity in approaching the greatest themes,—life and love and death. That 'irresistible needle-touch,' as one of her best critics has called it, piercing at once the very core of a thought, has found a response as wide and sympathetic as it has been unexpected even to those who knew best her compelling power. This second volume, while open to the same criticism as to form with its predecessor, shows also the same shining beauties.
