With a blend of rigorous academic analysis and engaging prose, Wiener delves into the emergence of Yiddish as a literary language amidst the backdrop of socio-political upheavals and national awakenings. His exploration spans various genres, offering insights into prominent authors and their contributions, while contextualizing the literature within the framework of Jewish life in Eastern Europe, thus establishing Yiddish literature as a vital component of Jewish cultural identity in the 19th century. Leo Wiener, a noted scholar and a significant figure in the field of Yiddish studies, was deeply influenced by his own Jewish heritage and the vibrant cultural milieu of Eastern European Jewry. His academic journey, marked by a passion for philology and a commitment to documenting the Jewish experience, galvanized his interest in Yiddish literature, which he viewed as an essential expression of Jewish resilience and creativity amidst adversity. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in Jewish studies, literature, or cultural history. Wiener's meticulous research and insightful interpretations not only illuminate the specificities of Yiddish literature but also provoke thought on broader themes of identity, cultural survival, and the dynamics of language. Though it started as a 300 person settlement in 1832, Chicago’s location near the Great Lakes and its access to the Mississippi River turned it into a major trading city overnight. The city became even more important when railroads were constructed to connect the country, making it the first major city in the “West” during the mid-19th century. By 1871, the original 300 person settlement was now home to about 300,000 people, and Chicago had become the first major city built by Americans rather than European colonial powers
Thus, it had taken less than 40 years for the new settlement of 300 to become a city of nearly 300,000, but it only took two days in 1871 for much of it to be destroyed. On the night of October 8, 1871, a blaze in the southwestern section of Chicago began to burn out of control. The popular legend is that a cow in Mrs. Catherine O’Leary’s barn had kicked over a lantern and started a fire. The story blaming the cow was a colorful fabrication, but the fire itself was very real, lasting almost two whole days and devouring several square miles of the city. The fire was so powerful that firefighters could not put it out, due to dry conditions, stiff winds, and the fact the city was mostly made of wood.
Walking around Chicago today, it’s easy to forget about its past as a rural frontier. That’s due in no small part to the way Chicago responded to the Great Fire of 1871. Immediately after the fire, Chicago encouraged inhabitants and architects to build over the ruins, spurring creative architecture with elaborate designs. Architects descended upon the city for the opportunity to rebuild the area, and over the next few decades they had rebuilt Chicago with the country’s most modern architecture and monuments.
Chicago recovered well enough within 20 years to win the right to host the World’s Fair in 1893.

Recent years have seen a growing recognition of the role that White Christian Nationalism plays in American society. As White Christian Nationalism has become a major force, and as racial and religious attitudes become increasingly aligned among whites—for example, the more likely you are to say that the decline of white people as a share of the population is "bad for society," the more likely you are to believe the government should support religious values—it has become reasonable to wonder which of the adjectives in the phrase "White Christian Nationalism" takes precedence.

In this book, Michael O. Emerson and Glenn E. Bracey II respond definitively: the answer is "white." The majority of white Christians in America, they argue, are believers in a "Religion of Whiteness" that shapes their faith, their politics, and more. The Religion of Whiteness, they argue, raises the perpetuation of racial inequality to a level of spiritual commitment that rivals followers' commitment to Christianity itself.

Using national survey data, in-depth interviews, and focus group results gathered over several years, Emerson and Bracey show how the Religion of Whiteness shapes the practice of Christianity for millions of Americans—and what can be done to confront it.
