Summary

“I’ll take you home, Mum”, five words I spoke to my mother. I
held her frozen hands as she lay in her coffin in the chapel of rest, a week
after her death. Her traumatic painful life was over.
In heaven now, Dearest Mum, you will know how much I have
loved you all my life, and may realize how desperately I needed your
support, and longed for your affection. You will know howmuch I longed
to be like you longed to have your personality your charm and sense of
humour, to be able to twist everyone around your little finger as you did
so they thought you were a lovely lady - which you were.
You told me that as a young Irish girl living in England whenever
“I’ll take you home Kathleen” came on the radio you would cry. You so
longed to be home. You will be soon.
Scattering my mother’s ashes on the grave of her parents,Michael
and ElizabethMerriman, in that cemetery in the heart of Ireland where
she was born was the only way I knew of showingmy love for themother
I never knew.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the author of A. Lincoln, a major new biography of one of America's greatest generals-and most misunderstood presidents
Finalist for the Gilder-Lehrman Military History Book Prize
In his time, Ulysses S. Grant was routinely grouped with George Washington and Abraham Lincoln in the "Trinity of Great American Leaders." But the battlefield commander-turned-commander-in-chief fell out of favor in the twentieth century. In American Ulysses, Ronald C. White argues that we need to once more revise our estimates of him in the twenty-first.
Based on seven years of research with primary documents-some of them never examined by previous Grant scholars-this is destined to become the Grant biography of our time. White, a biographer exceptionally skilled at writing momentous history from the inside out, shows Grant to be a generous, curious, introspective man and leader-a willing delegator with a natural gift for managing the rampaging egos of his fellow officers. His wife, Julia Dent Grant, long marginalized in the historic record, emerges in her own right as a spirited and influential partner.
Grant was not only a brilliant general but also a passionate defender of equal rights in post-Civil War America. After winning election to the White House in 1868, he used the power of the federal government to battle the Ku Klux Klan. He was the first president to state that the government's policy toward American Indians was immoral, and the first ex-president to embark on a world tour, and he cemented his reputation for courage by racing against death to complete his Personal Memoirs. Published by Mark Twain, it is widely considered to be the greatest autobiography by an American leader, but its place in Grant's life story has never been fully explored-until now.
One of those rare books that successfully recast our impression of an iconic historical figure, American Ulysses gives us a finely honed, three-dimensional portrait of Grant the man-husband, father, leader, writer-that should set the standard by which all future biographies of him will be measured.

Before his death in 2019, cultural anthropologist, author, and radio producer Richard K. Nelson's work focused primarily on the indigenous cultures of Alaska and, more generally, on the relationships between people and nature. Nelson lived for extended periods in Athabaskan and Alaskan Eskimo villages, experiences which inspired his earliest written works, including Hunters of the Northern Ice. In Raven's Witness, Lentfer tells Nelson’s story—from his midwestern childhood to his first experiences with Native culture in Alaska through his own lifelong passion for the land where he so belonged. Nelson was the author of the bestselling The Island Within and Heart and Blood. The recipient of multiple honorary degrees and numerous literary awards, he regularly packed auditoriums when he spoke. His depth of experience allowed him to become an intermediary between worlds. This is his story.

The first complete biography of Britain’s WWII spymaster presents an intimate look at his life and career, as well as an insider’s look at the SOE. Major General Sir Colin Gubbins was the driving force behind Britain’s Special Operations Executive, the secret military organization established by Winston Churchill in 1940. First as its Operations and Training Director, and then its Commander, Gubbins orchestrated every aspect of the SOE’s worldwide covert operations. Though Gubbins made enormous contributions to Allied victory, his life and work have remained shrouded in secrecy until now. With copious research and unprecedented access to family archives, biographer Brian Lett reveals the war hero’s early experiences in the Great War, as well as in Russia, Ireland, Poland, and as Head of British Resistance. The result is a fascinating biography that reveals as much about SOEs extraordinary activities as it does about the man who inspired and commanded them.

We've read about the scandal and the people involved - we've heard the pundits' opinions and the politicians' spins - but now we are finally able to hear two of the key participants - in their own words - and to get a glimpse of the people behind the headlines.
