Summary

“[A] fascinating treatise on moral psychology . . . in-depth interviews with five people who risked their lives to rescue Jews during World War II.” —Publishers WeeklyThrough moving interviews with five ordinary people who rescued Jews during the Holocaust, Kristen Monroe casts new light on a question at the heart of ethics: Why do people risk their lives for strangers and what drives such moral choice? Monroe's analysis points not to traditional explanations—such as religion or reason—but to identity. The rescuers' perceptions of themselves in relation to others made their extraordinary acts spontaneous and left the rescuers no choice but to act. To turn away Jews was, for them, literally unimaginable. In the words of one German Czech rescuer, "The hand of compassion was faster than the calculus of reason."At the heart of this unusual book are interviews with the rescuers, complex human beings from all parts of the Third Reich and all walks of life: Margot, a wealthy German who saved Jews while in exile in Holland; Otto, a German living in Prague who saved more than 100 Jews and provides surprising information about the plot to kill Hitler; John, a Dutchman on the Gestapo's "Most Wanted List"; Irene, a Polish student who hid eighteen Jews in the home of the German major for whom she was keeping house; and Knud, a Danish wartime policeman who took part in the extraordinary rescue of 85 percent of his country's Jews.Monroe's analysis of these stories is a dramatic illumination of the power of identity to shape our most basic political acts, including our treatment of others.

Everything you've been told about being a lawyer is wrong.
Many young lawyers believe they have only two career paths: a high-paying BigLaw job or a public interest job with meaningful work and limited pay.
Bill Reid chose a third path, which is hardly mentioned let alone encouraged in law school—combining purpose and prosperity. That path is a career as a plaintiffs' lawyer.
In Fighting Bullies, he provides a road map for considering a rewarding career in plaintiffs' law. The book is a straight-talk, no-BS guide to building a meaningful, high-impact legal career. Part personal story, part call to action, it presents a compelling case for why plaintiffs' law is the best career choice for lawyers interested in work that matters.
Essential reading for any aspiring lawyer, regardless of your interest in plaintiffs' law, Fighting Bullies offers a sharp, honest explanation of law firm economics set along with a thoughtful framework for thinking critically about your future in law.

A masterly introduction to the United States Constitution, this concise book leads the reader through an overview of the document’s individual articles and amendments. With clear and accessible language, Currie then examines each of the three branches of the federal government and explains the relation between the federal and state governments. He analyzes those constitutional provisions that are designed to protect citizens from governmental interference, such as the due process and equal protection clauses and the confusing first amendment provisions respecting the separation of church and state and includes discussions of judicial review and freedom of speech and of the press.

A sympathetic yet critical guide, Currie’s book enables students and laypersons to understand one of the cornerstones of the Western political tradition. The second edition incorporates the Supreme Court decisions that have affected constitutional interpretation.

“Superb . . . highly recommended for those seeking a reliable, understandable, and useful introduction to our constitution.”—Appellate Practice Journal and Update
