Summary

Love your cat, but hate its bad behavior? According to The Humane Society of the United States, body language, behavior, and vocalizations are keys to understanding the feline mind. If your cat seems to be constantly aloof or is exhibiting bad behavior, you may often wish you could speak directly to it about what it is thinking. Fortunately, you can communicate and understand your pet by studying its behavior and using the techniques found throughout this book.

By observing a cat’s body language and actions, we can guess at how it might be feeling. Want to know why your cat constantly hisses at strangers, frequently sulks, or attacks your feet while you are sleeping? How to Listen to Your Cat covers major aspects of feline behavior, including social behavior, protection of territory, hunting tactics, reproduction, and interaction with people and other pets. This book explores an array of behaviors often found in cats and what these behaviors should signal to their owners.

Learning to communicate with your kitty can help you know when it’s hungry, ready to play, content, or lonely. You will learn the importance of positive reinforcement, details on how a cat learns, how to develop a bond with your cat, and the basics of cat training. This book explores how to teach your feline friend to use the litter box, come when you call its name, and tolerate touch and grooming. Teach your cat useful behaviors, such as walking on a leash, sitting, staying, and standing, along with fun behaviors, such as shaking hands, begging, and fetching.

Comfort, fright, and hunger are the main feelings displayed among cats. The feelings result in a variety of behaviors. This book provides a breakdown of how these feelings are shown through changes in a cat’s eyes, ears, mouth, tail, and posture. The tone of a cat’s cry, the perk of its ears, and the sway of its tail can provide clues as to its intentions. This book also analyzes the different sounds cats make, including purring, hissing, spitting, and growling, and how these sounds tell owners what their cat is feeling. A variety of emotions displayed in cats will be analyzed, such as behaviors that suggest comfort, satisfaction with food, a welcomed greeting, sleepiness, safety, and much more. This book also offers photos so you can spot similar behavior in your own pet.

Cats are known to have a variety of personalities. These personalities and how they relate to different breeds are explored. Tips on training your cat and preventing or stopping bad behavior are given to promote peacefully cohabitation with your feline friend. Advice is provided for addressing typical problem behaviors among cats, including destructive scratching, spraying, aggression, eating plants, and litter box issues.

We have spent hundreds of hours interviewing veterinarians, animal trainers/behaviorists, and cat owners like yourself to compile useful information that will create a more harmonious relationship between you and your cat. As pet owners, we have a responsibility to ensure our pets are happy and safe; this book will serve as a tool for measuring these factors. Now, with the help of this book, you can love your cat and understand its behavior.

The New York Times–bestselling icon of the techno-aviation thriller takes to the skies in this memoir of a great American adventure in an open-cockpit biplane.   It was a bird’s-eye view of America—and the trip of a lifetime for author Stephen Coonts and his fourteen-year-old son. But even for Coonts, who had clocked 1,600 hours as a naval aviator and was the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross commendation, this was a first. He’d be flying closer to the earth than he ever had before. His big yellow wood-and-canvas bird was the Cannibal Queen, a Stearman open-cockpit biplane built in 1942. Destined for the scrap yard, it was rescued and restored for what Coonts would call his “Stearman summer.”   On a clear June afternoon in 1991, Coonts and his son took off to see the country the same way the barnstormers flew their Jennys: with a map and a compass. Coonts followed highways, railroad lines, back roads, mountains, rivers, and landmarks. For the next three months, seeing old friends and meeting new ones, he touched down on the diverse landscapes of each of the forty-eight contiguous states to record the stories of the American countryside, its spirited people, and its rich history.   Soaring from big cities to the heartland, experiencing everything from Bourbon Street jazz and small-town barbershop quartets to greasy spoons and backyard barbeques, the author of Flight of the Intruder and The Art of War captures not only the singular thrill of biplane aviation, but a nostalgia for the simple pleasures of an America thought lost and forgotten. Stephen Coonts found it, and in The Cannibal Queen he shares every exultant moment.  This ebook features an illustrated biography of Stephen Coonts, including rare photos from the author’s personal collection.

“Readers will find in his biography an extraordinary tale of the travails of twentieth-century railroading through the career of this one man.” —The Annals of Iowa

After graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, John W. Barriger III (1899–1976) started his career on the Pennsylvania Railroad as a rodman, shop hand, and then assistant yardmaster. His enthusiasm, tenacity, and lifelong passion for the industry propelled him professionally, culminating in leadership roles at Monon Railroad, Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad, Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad and the Boston and Maine Railroad. His legendary capability to save railroad corporations in peril earned him the nickname “doctor of sick railroads,” and his impact was also felt far from the train tracks, as he successfully guided New Deal relief efforts for the Railroad Division of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation during the Depression and served in the Office of Defense Transportation during World War II. Featuring numerous personal photographs and interviews, John W. Barriger III is an intimate account of a railroad magnate and his role in transforming the transportation industry.

“Thanks to Roger Grant’s latest book, Barriger and his amazing legacy endures, waiting to be rediscovered by a new generation of readers. Trust me, you’ll learn a lot.” —Classic Trains

A CAPTIVATING JOURNEY AROUND THE WORLD FROM THE CREATOR OF JAMES BOND
Ian Fleming’s world travels and interests, as well as his journalism and wartime experiences, lent authority to everything he wrote. In 1959, the Sunday Times commissioned Fleming to write a series of dispatches from the world’s most beguiling locales. The result was Thrilling Cities, a masterpiece of well-observed travelogue that stands ably alongside the author’s Bond canon.
From Hong Kong to Honolulu, New York to Naples, he left the bright main streets for the back alleys, abandoning tourist sites in favor of underground haunts, and mingling with celebrities, gangsters and geishas. The result is a series of vivid snapshots of a mysterious, vanished world from a twentieth century Western perspective.
Just like his most famous fictional creation, Ian Fleming was a well-traveled man of the world who knew where to go to find excitement, adventure…and danger. In Thrilling Cities, he takes us along on a journey of international intrigue worthy of James Bond.
