When Ireland (along with much of the rest of the world) went into lockdown last spring, we scratched our heads and wondered what to do to help lift people's spirits.* We joined forces with Irish Pensions & Finance and ran a competition celebrating Irish people's love of a good story – and a good laugh. There were only two requirements: make it funny, and make it (fairly) short. We were overwhelmed by the response: we received hundreds of entries, from all over the island (and further afield), written by people from all walks of life.
Comedian (and now bookseller) Kevin Gildea agreed to judge the entries. There could only be three winners (well four, in fact: the top prize was split between two outstanding stories) – but the entries were so good, we decided to gather the best of them into a book. And here they are – from the sublime to the ridiculous. Think Graham Norton's Big Red Chair to Samuel Beckett's humour – and all points in between. The result is: Wit from Lockdown Ireland. The contributors are Alan Brady, Sam Windrim, Fiona Whyte, Alan Howley, Noel Dillon-Daly, Eamonn Colfer, Mark Manning, Maria O'Rourke, Rebecca Kennedy, Shane McDonnell, Dan McKenna, Adrian Martin, Brendan Caldwell, A. J. McCallion, Gary Arkins, Steve Coronella, T. K. Vaughan, James Woods, David Butler, Sue Divin, Gabrielle Fogarty, Cathy Conlon, Declan Toohey, Gráinne Enright, Eamann Breen, Daniel O'Keeffe, Edward O'Neill, Cathal Holden, Rachel Fehily, Jim O'Meara, Darragh McManus, Dermot Lane, Anthony Kelly, Yvonne Roche-Harth, Steve Wade, Joseph Joyce, Keith Martin, John Anderson, Tony Clayton-Lea

A look at the extensive history of the folkcraft, its presence in the modern world, and resources to help beginners enter the world of textile artistry.   This book offers a whistle-stop guide to the history of spinning and weaving. The story begins in prehistory when people first wove yarns to create clothing and blankets. The book explores how spinning and weaving have continued to be important throughout human history (or should that be herstory), in artistic, economic, and functional terms.   The second part of the book brings us up to date, via interviews with modern-day spinning and weaving artisans. These textiles artists generously allowed the author a window into their studios and discussed the way they use and adapt traditional methods, techniques, and tools for the twenty-first century. Photos of their work and their working environment offer a unique view into the world of this ancient craft.   Finally, if you are inspired to try your hand at this fascinating art, the book also has a resources section. It includes a valuable list of suppliers of fiber, dyes, tools, and yarn, as well as information about training courses, useful websites, and more—everything you need to get started.

A fascinating account of the only airworthy Hawker Hurricane, “now regarded as the most historic British aircraft to survive in flying condition from WW2” (FLYER). In 1982 when he was traveling in India, Peter Vacher stumbled on the remains of a British plane—a Hurricane Mark I, a veteran of the Battle of Britain. It was in a dreadful state. Could he restore it? Would it fly again? Not until 14 years later did he decide to act and after six years of wrangling he got the icon home. Then the truly difficult process of restoration began—a worldwide search for parts, careful reconstruction, flight testing—-until in 2005 it flew again to the delight of thousands of enthusiasts. Along the way Peter reunited three auspicious veterans—Peter Thompson, Bunny Currant, and Bob Foster—with R4118, men who had flown her during the war. To this day, the aircraft’s grace and splendor in flight is enjoyed by crowds across the UK.“The amazing story of how this only surviving Hurricane from the Battle of Britain was discovered and lovingly restored.” —The Mail on Sunday
