Summary

Bronwyn is a kind and resourceful healer, ahead of her time, who cares for her aging father and two young sisters until her father is murdered by the king's men and makes all three orphans. She can entrance a man with her singing voice and the kindness in her pretty face, but she's an impoverished peasant who lives in the dark, suspicious times of fifteenth-century England where such a healing woman is feared. Witches are believed to be everywhere, waiting to ensnare a powerful man...like Edward the Fourth of England, who comes across her one day singing in a tavern and makes her his reluctant mistress. But Edward's powerful adversary, The Earl of Warwick, seeks to take over the throne of England and Bronwyn is caught between the two; one she loves, the other she loathes. One cherishes her, the other wants to possess and control her. As political battle lines form, and the country is torn apart by civil upheaval and bloody carnage, the two sides wrestle for the crown. Who will win that war and who will she end up with? When she's condemned to burn as a witch, which man will save her and which will let her die?

As compelling as fiction, The Mystery of Beautiful Nell Cropsey tells the dramatic story of the disappearance of nineteen-year-old Nell Cropsey from her riverside home in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, in November 1901. Bloodhounds, detectives, divers, and even a psychic were brought in to search for her, and the case immediately became a national sensation. Bland Simpson, who first heard the tale as an Elizabeth City schoolboy, weaves this true story into a colorful nonfiction account, told in three first-person voices: Nell's sister Ollie; famous newspaper editor W. O. Saunders, who covered the case as a young reporter; and Jim Wilcox, Nell's beau, who was implicated in the case. Nell and Jim's romance, her disappearance, the great search, the trials, and their aftermath are artfully reconstructed from interviews, court records, and newspaper accounts.

Nella Larsen's "Quicksand" paints a poignant portrait of Helga Crane, a young woman grappling with her mixed racial heritage in the 1920s. Caught between societal expectations and her yearning for identity, Helga navigates different settings – the segregated South, bustling Harlem, and even Denmark – searching for a place to belong. Yet, societal constraints and her own internal struggles leave her feeling trapped, like sinking in quicksand. Through Helga's journey, Larsen explores themes of race, class, and the search for self in a world fraught with prejudice and limited options.
