Summary

The design of this book owes much to M. David Merrill, Ph.D., who in the 70s was a professor at Brigham Young University. At the time, he was researching concepts for designing curriculum. He developed a method of designing instructional materials that used the principles of Rule Example - Practice. The term rule covered such items as a mathematical rule, a classification paradigm, a descriptive category, or other information that gives the students a rule for understanding the main concept being taught. The term example covered the criterion showing how the rule worked. The term practice gave the student a way to perform an exercise, that is, in practicing with other variations of the example to gain experience in using the rule. For Merrills principles to be effective, the example must match the practice and the governing rule.
RESEARCH & THE ANALYSIS OF RESEARCH HYPOTHESES has been designed employing Merrills theories. The rule is described and defined in the portion of each unit of instruction labeled PURPOSE: The example and matching practice are described in the portion labeled OBJECTIVES: The body of the unit describes the rule in more detail giving examples as needed. Finally, there is an assignment which requires the student to put the rule into practice. The two volumes provide a basis for doing a research study which graduate students can use as a model for their thesis or dissertation. Volume 1 covers basic principles and processes for doing a research study and Volume 2 covers the five major procedures for testing research data: the z-test, the t-test, the Pearson correlation test, the Spearman correlation test and the Chi Square test. Note:
Chi is pronounced Kai; the Chi-Square symbol is: ?2

One Doctor’s Surprising Answer to the Epidemic of Autoimmunity and Chronic Disease
Over the past fifty years, rates of autoimmunity and chronic disease have exploded: currently 1 in 2.5 American children has an allergy, 1 in 11 has asthma, 1 in 13 has severe food allergies, and 1 in 36 has autism. While some attribute this rise to increased awareness and diagnosis, Thomas Cowan, MD, argues for a direct causal relationship to a corresponding increase in the number of vaccines American children typically receive—approximately 70 vaccine doses by age eighteen. The goal of these vaccines is precisely what we’re now seeing in such abundance among our chronically ill children: the provocation of immune response.
Dr. Cowan looks at emerging evidence that certain childhood illnesses are actually protective of disease later in life; examines the role of fever, the gut, and cellular fluid in immune health; argues that vaccination is an ineffective (and harmful) attempt to shortcut a complex immune response; and asserts that the medical establishment has engaged in an authoritarian argument that robs parents of informed consent. His ultimate question, from the point of view of a doctor who has decades of experience treating countless children is: What are we really doing to children when we vaccinate them?

    Summer Solstice - An Essay

“A vivid contrast to this moment of masks: the immediacy of a season bursting out of itself, elemental and clean” from the acclaimed author of Wake, Siren (Portland Press Herald).

Summer is fireflies and sparklers. Fat red tomatoes sliced thin and salted. Lemonade and long dreamy days. The treasures of the season are gone much too soon—but they’re captured here, in loving sensuous prose that’s both personal and universal, for you to find any time of year.

Experience the most evocative tribute to the meaning of the season, a season whose magical feeling stays with us even in winter. Where does that feeling come from? What is summer made of? The smell of cut grass behind the gasoline of a lawnmower. A crown you’ve made of flowers. Blackberry bush prickers. First hot dog off the grill. Stargazing and sleeping with the windows open. This essay brims with a searching honesty and insight about what this season has meant in our pasts and what it might mean in our lives ahead.

Release yourself into the sky and feel, Nina MacLaughlin writes, for a moment: there’s time.

If summer is the season of your life, if the months between Memorial Day and Labor Day hold your favorite memories, you’ll love Summer Solstice.

“For those who cannot safely venture from their homes this season, MacLaughlin’s book can be that breath of fresh air, the nostalgic call back to better days, and the hope for a future when we can safely gather again under open sky . . . [Summer Solstice is] a brief reverie, short and sweet like the fleeting days it describes.” —Green Mountain Review
